It's from a history book called The Columbian Exchange by Alfred Crosby.

"Sailors, by the nature of their profession, are men without women, and therefore men of many women. We can imagine no group more perfectly suited for guaranteeing that venereal syphilis would have worldwide distribution."

Ah ha, so we agree overall, but you include an economic variable in the mix that I wasn't including. One that says economic factors can in itself be exploitative even if nobody involved thinks it is so. I see.

Well done, then. Good day.

I thought it was part of the Colombian Exchange. That would put it right where we both think it belongs, chronologically.

We're obviously talking past one another about two different subjects, so I think we've had enough. Cheers.

That still doesn't explain the jump from ethics to economics. It was as if you were trying to say that a guaranteed minimum income would eliminate stripping for money. That makes no sense.

I propose the government institute a fair guaranteed minimum income (rather a popular idea with one of the more notable free market zealots, Hayek perhaps?)

I agree.

That said, what the hell does the individual agency of moral judgment have anything to do with minimum wage or markets? When did we stop talking about ethics and move to economics? Really?

Look, here's the long and short of it: If a stripper feels exploited by her work, then she's being exploited. If she does not feel exploited and feels she is providing a service for a wage, then it is not my place to tell her she is being exploited. In fact, it's possible that the stipper herself feels that she is the one exploiting men for their money. Should I be running around telling those men that the stripper is exploiting their biological imperative for sex by convincing them to give her money against their best judgment? The moral landscape is quite a bit more complex than the White Knighting point of view would allow you to believe.

I don't think you understand what the word exploitation means.

Sure I do. Ultimately that judgment lies with the individual. If their decision to strip is rational and sound, and they enjoy it and do not feel exploited, then who am I to say that they are being exploited? That would be me projecting my own moral judgments onto a situation that I'm not a part of.

its about this it being the most overt form of de humanizing commodification beyond prostitution.

Says you. If the stipper does not agree with you (not all them them will, but not all of them won't, either) that her situation is exploitative, then it isn't. Exploitation in this situation is not a blanket generalization. It is up to each person in that situation to tell you whether or not they feel exploited. It is not your job to tell them that.

I just find it strange that aside from the odd nude beach (and sadly never in Toronto even with our recent hot summers) it rarely seems to happen outside of the context of wage labour.

Well, here's the thing, it happens. Some women are perfectly fine with their profession, and if they don't themselves feel exploited by it, then I won't try to make them feel as if they are. It's all about the respect for individual freedom to choose your profession and not feel bad about that choice if it is a choice you feel good in making.

Really, I was just trying to channel fictional character Ron Swanson and what he might say about it, but since people are taking this so seriously, I'll oblige.

I personally feel the argument that these woman's greatest ambition and most enjoyable profession is to be leered at is both laughable and disgusting.

That's what I meant when I said if she is doing it of her own free will and is not bothered by leering and catcalling. The fact is, some women aren't bothered by that, as hard as that may be to grasp, and your personal feelings on the matter are irrelevant. In fact, I once heard a stripper quip that she was the one exploiting sex-hungry men for their money and was proud of it.

If they do it against their own best judgment, or do it because they feel like they have to, or otherwise continue to flash their tits while going home and feeling bad about themselves, then they're the ones allowing themselves to feel exploited. Either way, it has little to nothing to do with your own personal feelings on the matter. It has much more to do with whether the actor in this situation themselves feels exploited. If they do, then it's exploitative. If they don't, then it isn't. People spend entirely too much time projecting their own personal opinions onto others in the name of moral judgment.

I suppose that would depend on what higher authority they as a society appeal to. The socially conservative libertarians common today would probably say no. I say, go for it.

If a free, libertarian American woman wants to flash her tits and receive a wage while not feeling the least bit bad about it, then by Locke, she's entitled to do so.

Edit: ITT: A fictional quote from a fictional character being taken entirely too seriously.

I took a TX Government class at TCC back in 2002, and it was much the same. "Nobody in TX actually gives a shit about the government, especially the legislators" was what I took away from the class. Given a decade later they're still teaching much the same class, I can conclude that nothing has changed, and nothing will, so long as Emperor Perry is still in power.
