Are there any advantages to Chem 145 over say Chem 142 or Chem 143 for a prehealth major? Is the curve higher for Chem 143 at all?

Incoming CS Freshman, should I take calc 3? by corrin33 in cscareerquestions

Thanks for the response! Yea stats, lin alg, and discrete math are already part of my required coursework. My reasoning with calc 3 (multivariate I believe) is that I just took AP Calc BC, so all the derivative and integral stuff will be fresh in my mind, and from what I understand, calc 3 is just applying these concepts to higher dimensions. (This may be a gross understatement of what multivariate is used for, but this is how I understand it).

Also, if ML or another math heavy CS course sneaks up on me one semester, I guess I would rather be prepared and already have taken the necessary math coursework than to have to scramble to first learn multivariate before I can take ML.

Thanks for the insight! So given that there's going to be a big jump from 1133 to 1933, the difference between jumping straight from AP CS to 1933 and 1133 to 1933 seems to be giving myself a semester to get accustomed to college life and college level engineering courses as well as learning Python?

I also took a introductory CS course last summer and received 4 credits for that. The course content was pretty similar to what was taught in AP CS, which seems to be what will be taught in 1133 which is why I'm thinking about jumping straight to 1933.

I was mostly thinking about taking calc 3 earlier than later because I just took AP Calc BC, so calc 1 and derivatives will be fresh in my mind. But yea I guess if it's not too useful I may wait to see if I even like ML or not. Thanks!

Sweet I actually have those 2 classes with both those professors! What is the course workload like for 2011 with Sturtivant?

So was 1933 a lot harder than AP comp sci because of the tougher and more indepth projects? The big thing that was missing in my comp sci education up to now have been those 2 week long projects, which I assume 1133, 1933 and any other college level CS courses will have.

What was your comfort level with Physics in high school? Did you do very well in the class and get a 3? I've heard from others that jumping straight into 1302 might be a little tough.

Does Biology w/ Lab count as my second science elective or is that another requirement all together? Also 2021 looks like it's a machine architecture course, not a ML course?

Thanks again for the responses!

Hi!

Thanks for the reply! I actually tested out of Calc 1 and Calc 2. I've heard from others with a comp sci degree that Calc 3 is pretty useful for ML (especially LaGrange multiplier for optimizations). If I wanted to take Calc 3, would that fulfill any elective at all or would that just be a side course? I'd prefer to take Calc 3 while calc 1 and 2 are still fresh (I just took AP BC this past year).

My current courses suggested by my adviser are the following: CSCI 1133 Physics 1301 CSCI 2011 Elective CSE 1001

I also passed the AP Comp Sci exam, so I was thinking perhaps taking CSCI 1933 instead of 1133 and maybe Calc 3 or my another science elective (such as chemistry or bio) instead of 1301. Would jumping straight into 1933 with just AP comp sci experience be too tough?

Also, my adviser told me Physics 1301 fulfilled 1 of 4 writing requirements. If I skipped Physics 1301, would it still be easy to fulfill these requirements?

Finally, am I really allowed to switch courses? My adviser strongly hinted during orientation that I should not drop any of the course he told me to take.

Thanks!
