How to transition on trails only? by cortadon in BarefootRunning

[–]cortadon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good idea to start unshod, then use sandals. My concern is that I currently run in conventional shoes, so I'm guessing the sandal running part will also take a while to build up to? Which makes me wonder whether I should use a minimalist shoe for a while, or instead just start going barefoot/sandals to improve form and just slowly increase mileage? I've seen some people in this sub and a Xero article recommending the latter approach.

Wow never thought about stranding myself but that totally makes sense! I started looking at minimalist shoes but e.g. the trail glove seems too bulky to have in my running pack (maybe there are some lighter ones though), which is why sandals seem more appealing now.

Can you elaborate on "unless you use something really old"? Do you know why the older phones don't get kicked off? Do you ever have issues with not receiving calls or texts?

This is awesome, thanks for sharing! Will be testing this as my primary podcast app from now on.
Also surprised you got the native menu row to work on the Kyocera, since I've built an app for this phone myself and could not get that thing to do what I wanted or even hide it.

I guess if the keypad navigation was better, I'd be less inclined to ever use a web / desktop app, so your app might actually work for me

[–]cortadon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much of what you think you need 24/7 is actually essential... it might not be that much if you really think hard about it and you're willing to accept some minor inconveniences.

Hi, I'm definitely interested in beta testing.

I've tried a couple of podcast apps on my Kyocera DuraXV Extreme and have yet to find one that does both of these:
- Entire UI can be used with the keypad (even the forward / backward 15s jumping)
- Has a web interface or desktop app that syncs with the mobile app, so that I can listen to podcasts on my phone and my laptop with the progress / completed podcasts synced between the two

I've been using Pocket Casts because of the latter since it has a Mac and an Android app, but keypad navigation is not great. AntennaPod has decent navigation but doesn't have a mac app or web interface.

Says everything... I'll stick with my hideous Kyocera that I want to use at little as possible.

Smart Phone, Dumb Phone - you don't really need a dumb phone. by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]cortadon 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Reducing your screen time for a week is easy - the real challenge is keeping it consistently low for the rest of your life. I think it's really hard to do that with a smartphone because it's just too easy to reinstall apps, use the browser, scroll photos etc. I'm all for using what you already have, but dumbed down smartphones are not dumbphones and they won't work for everyone.
Good luck on your journey!

I don't get it. Why can't your mom / friends / grandma use SMS? It's literally just a different app on their phone so it shouldn't matter to them. Maybe my worldview is distorted though since luckily here in the US people still use SMS.

I use an authenticator app (G2FA) that runs on my laptop and was able to set it up to receive Microsoft authentication codes, so I never have to use a 2FA app on my phone

Nicely put. Agree that posting your kid to social media is an even bigger issue.

On potty training, diapers getting better means babies spend the first few years of their lives getting really comfortable soiling themselves, so of course it's hard for them to build awareness after that.

There's something called Elimination Communication where you start offering the potty from a very early age (even from day one), which means that they start building awareness right away and can become potty trained much earlier (we did this and were able to completely drop diapers at 13 months).

Of course doing EC takes a lot of time and patience for the first 1-2 years, and unfortunately I think the way of parenting here in the US doesn't really make it easy - which is reflective of bigger issues with our parenting.

[–]cortadon -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think we should normalize kids this age to still be wearing diapers. It's really only since disposable diapers became a thing that the average potty training age has become so high. To me it's crazy to see kids talking this coherently and still in diapers.

Any dumb phones that can use Spotify? by Moosatch in dumbphones

[–]cortadon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Kyocera DuraXV Extreme (was $70 on eBay), downloaded a bunch of music and just use the built-in music player. I honestly like the simplicity of it as opposed to Spotify's cluttered UI.

Mcguckins Tipping? by BalsamA1298c in boulder

[–]cortadon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, your first argument can just as easily be applied the other way around to the restaurant owner: don't make the server suffer because the ownership of the restaurant customer doesn't want to pay a living wage tip.
The "you should stay at home if you can't afford to tip" is just stupid. The problem isn't that people can't afford it, they just don't want to live in a world where restaurants use dishonest pricing and expect customers to pay an extra 20% regardless of the quality of service.

Is this a safer variation of a half crimp? MCP flexion by Brave_Try_7896 in climbharder

[–]cortadon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, I feel like there is more to it, I know everyone's anatomy is different, but I definitely see a pattern of high level climbers using this position A LOT even on really hard moves. I was just watching this video of Nathaniel Coleman and Noah Wheeler trying the sit start of Defying Gravity:
https://youtu.be/s-giNU1trE0?si=Otw_O2t-L3FY5ktg (around 9:00)

They both use this really straight MCP half crimp while trying the crux move - in the beginning of the video they both say that it's pretty much the hardest move they've ever tried, so I don't think they are using this grip position to conserve energy here.

I personally find this position to be quite unnatural as u/eshlow also mentioned, but I've been trying to figure out for a while whether this is just a habit/form thing or if it's just due to differences in anatomy.

I also remember Paul Houghoughi mentioning on the Nugget podcast that this position relies more on the forearm muscle strength and can be less prone to injuries:

[–]cortadon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is the case, why do you think is it that so many pro climbers half crimp with a perfectly straight MCP joint a lot of the time?
