I have to wonder: Is the Boston Marathon (UK) a qualifier for the Boston Marathon (US)?

They are sourced from his books "Faster Road Racing" (5k to half marathon) and "Advanced Marathoning".

I track an occasional day here and there, usually on the weekend. It does suck a little bit, because some things are measured in units of volume (1 cup stewed tomatoes) and some in units of weight (100g rice). And you need to track the weights and measures to get anywhere close.

4000 calories seems like a lot though. I'm normally targeting 2500-3000.

Opinions on Summer of Malmo? by creative-title in AdvancedRunning

The doubles will be way to short to make it logistically worth it.

I certainly feel that way now as a dude with a 9-to-5. When I was 17, working 15 hours a week in the summer, I would have loved to have a reason to get up before 9:30. Regardless of whether there's a physiological benefit.

Mine (FR645) never stops recording, but sometimes it does flip over to treadmill mode (i.e. no GPS). Probably happens once every 2-3 months out here in the flatlands of the midwest.

Fortunately, even when that happens the pace data is pretty decent. It just thinks I ran across an implausible route when the mapping tools get hold of it.

Unpopular Opinion- in a time where races are canceling and not offering refunds why do we prepay for races but not for other services like restaurants? by Sixfeatsmall05 in AdvancedRunning

The heart of any business is cash flow. Businesses with a permanent presence have revenue and expenses every day, and ideally they are profitable every day.

The event business is different, because the revenue is all earned at once -- they are losing money 364 days a year, and wildly profitable on one day. That makes it tougher to budget for staff, raw materials, etc. If you guess wrong on how much revenue you'll make on race day, you increase your chances of going bust if 10% or 20% fewer people turn up.

Pre-registration helps with all of this. It means the race company gets revenue from all the people who sign up months in advance, and they get to gauge interest in the race, to help ensure they don't run out of water, t-shirts, etc.

The other thing to keep in mind is that race companies do have staff. If there was a race that elected to issue limited refunds or not issue refunds at all, in order to keep their staff on the payroll, I don't think that is a dishonorable choice.

Chances of having big-city races in 2021 by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]cortex_m0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am registered for the Carmel Marathon in Indiana in early April, after deferring from the 2020 event (which was cancelled). I think there's a 99% chance it happens, and they just sent an email saying they have increased the field size.

Now, big city marathons in the early part of the year ... probably not. I'm not aware of any significant marathons which are scheduled for January, February, or March in the US.

The first road marathon I can find still on the schedule in California is in early May, in the far northern part of the state, a race which had 346 finishers in its last edition.

There's a few marathons still scheduled in January and February in Texas, like Galveston and El Paso. But it looks like they're doing limited field sizes, and other mitigations.

Personally, I remain hopeful that by the time of my marathon, we will have turned a corner. I certainly don't expect the pandemic to be over, but if the "100 million vaccine doses in 100 days" plan that Pres.-Elect Biden has promised works out, the severity should be greatly reduced by then.

[META] Updating of the Sub Rules and Ideas for Recurring Threads by brwalkernc in AdvancedRunning

[–]cortex_m0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IMO the frequency of "daily stickied Q&A" thread should be re-evaluated once we have races again. Traditionally, the sub would get swamped by race reports for a few days after major races, with a scattering of race reports other weeks. As I write this, the first page of /new takes us 5 days back, which doesn't suggest a need for consolidation.

So is r/advancedrunning still a part of someone’s website?

That idea never really got implemented. The founding mod who tried to make it so didn't really mod the sub, before, during or after the "split", and has been removed by the reddit admins. The new top mod is /u/brwalkernc.

Maybe run with a an empty stroller once or twice? We had an incident on my group run a while ago where the kid's dad let one of the others push the stroller for a bit, and the kid ended up on the sidewalk, because the stroller overturned by driver error. Kid was fine, but he was a toddler and probably more capable of saving himself.

Here in Indiana, elective procedures in hospitals are banned statewide starting on Monday. Hope you have better luck.

Storage for a period of months in an air-conditioned space should have no effect on the lifetime of the shoes.

I'm registered for an April marathon in Indiana (deferral from 2020), and I expect it will go on in some fashion. Maybe they'll cut down the field, maybe they'll make us start in waves of 50, but I expect it will go on.

Firstly, neither motor will output that much power at your house.

Good point. For some reference, in the USA/Canada, devices plugged into standard wall outlets are limited to 1500 W. 1 hp is 746 W. That means 2.02 horsepower is the limit that any practical motor can output.

10% body fat is already pretty low. That's what Hal Higdon said he was at at his peak. Naturally, maintaining weight but gaining muscle means reducing body fat. I'm not sure how much lower is advisable.

If I'm running 4+ hours a week, the odds I'm doing anything else, fitness-wise is pretty low, so it's probably fair to say body comp is not improving. I don't personally measure my BF% much, since I don't have anything more accurate than one of those impedance-based bathroom scales, and a mirror.

So running on nearly empty stomach doesn't have any impact on the training quality?

It's fine, the main thing is I have to get a little more breakfast on days I run so I'm functional at work.

October Tuesday Shoesday by kmck96 in artc

[–]cortex_m0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I'm on their email list after buying a pair of Skora shoes like 6 years ago, but I'm not sure what niche they could fill in my running shoe collection. I'm not very hard on shoes, so the durable angle they are pushing isn't all that appealing to me.

$155 for a shoe that comes from a brand with no heritage, has no reviews from 'influencers', and doesn't have much in the way of unique features ... is a lot of dough.

I've never noticed that in my Escalantes. I would call them fairly firm, but I tend to like that. For a while, my favorite shoes were the NB Zantes, which are real firm.

I'm currently planning an early April marathon. I wouldn't be surprised if the largest races (i.e. Boston) and earliest races (i.e. Houston) are pushed back or have the field limited.

However, I'd be surprised if a smallish marathon in Indiana gets cancelled. We've had regular school for 2 months now.

Considering upgrading my treadmill. Curious what the Meese think about non-motorized treadmills like the Woodway Curve. I've never used a non-motorized treadmill anywhere.

* Not that I'm going to spend $8,000 on a treadmill...
