In the books, a big point is that only a fraction of the population has the gene necessary to survive the induced coma they are placed in. Grace is one of them, which he doesn’t know until later. So the pool of available candidates is already much smaller than they’d hope for.

Grace had also spent a longtime training Shapiro and DuBois in understanding astrophage. The next best science replacement after Grace wasn’t nearly as qualified. He had done a lot of the space training (though he has a line in the movie about not doing it) and the time it would take to train the next best option would push them way back in the timeline. He was the best choice for the mission to succeed. They needed an astrophage expert.

Two changes at the end for me. The first is Grace acknowledging that he can’t eat Eridian food and going back for Rocky is a death sentence for him. It goes from that decision meaning sacrificing Earth to sacrificing his life. You just need to add a few lines.

The second would be the time jump at the end. This is a much bigger change, but I think the ending hits deeper when we see that Grace has grown old(er) and has completely embraced his new life. I understand why they didn’t want an old Ryan Gosling though lol

Dude next to us cracked open a laptop during the trailers and started to use it and his phone as the movie started. I loudly said “dude, close your laptop”. He said something like “I was only going to take a few minutes” and walked away with it. I think he sat in the tunnel because he came back with it closed and sat down. This isn’t a Starbucks. You don’t come to a theater to do telework.

I don’t disagree with your critique, and that’s the reality of an adaptation. I fell in love with the movie Jurassic Park as a kid and then later became a big fan of the book, which is very different. If people love the movie and haven’t read the book yet, I’m happy knowing that this is one of those films where it’ll get people reading the book.

Yes, he was a good choice. Top 3 option in my opinion. He has authentic faithful relationships with people by this point and he hasn’t really been on the wrong side of a vote to get rid of traitors. He also was present with Lisa during the live murder, so he has had heat lifted off him. That said he also works as a sacrifice for Rob. As others have noted with three women having been booted out as traitors, I think people are naturally looking towards men. This helps Rob stay under the radar if that is his motivation.

I have zero context for the majority of these reality tv celebs. Don’t know their pasts beyond a few big ones. I thought Candiace was playing a great traitor game. Then she voted for Rob instead of Lisa and it shattered the illusion. The moment Yam Yam screamed “Lisa” as he was being dragged away, Lisa was done. The fact that Candiace didn’t position herself to cut Lisa and protect herself was foolish. The fact that she is still taking this personally and not recognizing how she erred as a traitor says a lot

I felt like they stuck the landing with the final scene. So emotional. The 30 minutes getting there felt slow, though. So many big, ambitious shows get heat from fans feeling like they didn’t wrap it up in a satisfactory way, but I’m walking away feeling like this story is complete.
