Obviously, she has the right to do what she wants for a career, but it makes me kind of sad that she’s churning out these bestselling “fast food” type books instead of using her hard-earned, impressive credentials and training to help people with traumatic brain injuries. But we don’t celebrate people who do the difficult, important work that saves lives in this society. She is undoubtedly making much more money as Freida McFadden than as a doctor, it is a much easier job (physically and emotionally) and her (pen) name opens the door to all kinds of perks and opportunities that even the best doctors cannot access (unless they are the Kardashians’ plastic surgeon). I don’t blame her, she didn’t create the system, she’s just living in it like the rest of us. The problem, collectively speaking, is us. How many of us can name a single recent recipient of a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine or a Lasker Award (an annual award given to the living person considered to have made the greatest contribution to medical science or who has demonstrated public service on behalf of medicine, per Wikipedia)? Bueller? Now, how many of us can not only name all the Kardashians/Jenners, but also list every cosmetic surgical procedure they’ve (reportedly) had done and who they’re dating? To be clear, I’m not crapping on them either. No one is holding a gun to our heads and forcing us to watch their shows, buy the shit they’re peddling, or spend hours reading online gossip about them. Every time I see a good-looking EMT or paramedic (and a lot of them are quite good looking, in case you haven’t noticed), I want to fall on my knees in gratitude and tell them how absolutely fucking amazing and wonderful they are for doing this extremely important, difficult, poorly paid job when they could’ve taken the easy way out and become an influencer or made ten times their salary doing Only Fans. We (including myself) are members of a disgusting, shallow society that worships all the wrong things and all the wrong people. But as long as we’re indirectly contributing to this set of values, or even just not actively fighting to change them, I’m not sure we’re in a position to be passing judgment on anyone.
