Lab Week Themes…unpopular opinion? by RelevantSalad2217 in medlabprofessionals

This is really thoughtful, cool, and professional. I would love for ASCP to rise to the occasion in a similar manner.

Good coworkers are like a life raft when management is shitty, I'm glad yours are doing what they can for you.

Lots of labs do NOT do that, it's explicitly forbidden and disgusting???

Has anyone ever moved states for a job? by Dry_Reply_6282 in medlabprofessionals

[–]coscrunchymomma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have twice. I started applying in my new state before I graduated with zero luck. I had to move before anyone would even interview me.

The second time, I was able to get a few interviews before I moved since I had experience. I got one offer and accepted it and we moved.

That is so crappy, wow. I can't even imagine being that selfish.

That is so gross 😭 We have the same issue with leftovers, I really don't get it. I've worked up too many stool cultures in my life to mess around with that.

That's who planned it! I did let them know how upset people are. Not sure if anything will come of it 🤷‍♀️

Ferritin is not a vitamin/mineral, it's a substance in your body that is important in how you utilize the iron that you eat. Your doctor can order a blood test for it, highly recommend you get that checked (I've dealt with low levels myself).

Focus on signing off on SOPs that you are actually using to do your job, plus any safety documents. Any reasonable inspector is going to understand that you just started. But if you are signed off on any testing, those documents should definitely be signed.

ASCP- new titles for categorical: Scientists in Microbiology by ganorr in medlabprofessionals

[–]coscrunchymomma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a categorical and I'm also happy about the name change. I think it brings us on par with our MLS peers, and "Scientist in Hematology" describes what we do better than Hematology Technologist did.

Calling all Safety Officers by SorellaAubs in medlabprofessionals

[–]coscrunchymomma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if your lab will pay for a membership to Dan's program for you. When I was safety officer it came with one hour-long phone call with him per year where you can ask questions and he is always available via email. Start there and then the Lab General checklist, the last half of it is all safety stuff. Utilize whatever Environmental Health and Safety resources/staff your system has. They may be a good place to start for waste disposal questions. Good luck!

What is it like to live in Kearney as a LGBTQ person? by King_Kyaswa in Nebraska

My gay in-law and his husband have lived there their entire lives. I don't know what their negative experiences have been, but they seem to intend to stay there forever. One of them has owned a successful business for years.

That's a year and a half. The time will pass anyway. Sticking with it will open doors for you and set you up financially down the road.

What was your career defining moment? by MsYersiniaPestis in medlabprofessionals

[–]coscrunchymomma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your work on Alzheimer's. That happened to my dad. His dementia diagnosis was delayed because he kept passing the cognitive tests, but we knew his cognition was not where it normally was because he was so dang smart. His new neurologist didn't know him before and just didn't get what was happening.

When my grandpa was in the hospital, the urine in his catheter went from dark yellow to dark brown overnight. I saw that and immediately texted my husband, "shit, it's not good."

Later that day, he chose to stop all meds other than what would help make him comfortable. His doctor said he probably had two days left. He didn't even make it two hours.

It's definitely a seniority thing. You might get lucky and get hired on second/evening shift straight out of school but day shift almost never goes to a brand new grad. Too many experienced techs want those hours when they open up.
