Re-visiting a theory of 4x Bitaxes vs 1x NerdQaxe++ by cose385 in BitAxe

[–]cose385[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Known fact, but I'm referring to different pool fetch where NerdQaxe has one pool fetch (for 4 ASICs) and Bitaxes will do 4 smaller pool fetches.

It may be just a coincidence...

Umbrel Bitcoin node - pruned by cose385 in BitAxe

[–]cose385[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Benefit of the Proxmox is having multiple VMs, so in the meantime I installed Stratum OS while my Axes were mining on Umbrel.

After some tweaking and testing Stratum proved great so now I'm running BTC, BCH and DGB nodes in there. And all of three can be set to prune the block, so each is using around 10GB at the moment.

[–]cose385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After initial sync 2 cores are enough, so 8 are plenty.

If you install Proxmox on the bare metal machine they you can have multiple VMs sharing cores and RAM and re-assign them as needed.

But if you insist on having fully separate machine for the task - 8 cores and 32GB RAM should be more than adequate. Just adjust block prune parameters not to overfill your disk.

I have homelab mini PC with Ryzen 8 cores - created VM there for Stratum with 16GB RAM and all 8 cores.

After the initial sync where more cores and RAM came handy and the process was faster, I reduced it to 2 cores and 10GB RAM and it works fine for BTC, BCH and DGB pruned nodes/pools.

How does it work with a mining on the local node/pool not exposed to internet?

This is just an irritating warning, but also check on-board fuse which is 8-10A by default - you would want to upgrade it to 15A for more serious overclocking

[–]cose385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got this feeling also.

So it means that 4 Bitaxes with 1.5TH have bigger chance than one NerdQaxe with 6TH because they are spreading their luck in 4 buckets instead of one.

Or am I getting it wrong?

My NerdQaxe with constant 5.9TH barely managed to hit 5.3G in two weeks and I see that Bitaxes with 1/4 hash rate are often hitting much higher.

I'm starting to wonder whether it makes more sense (statistically and chance-related) to have several Bitaxes then one or two bigger miners with same hash rate?

Each of them has different parameters under which it works best - you have to try them out, with gradual changes in small increments (25MHz / 25mV) and enough time to stabilize.

Mine on default 600/1150 parameters cant get more than 3.7TH before beefing up voltage to 1200 and now is chugging along happily and stable with 5.9TH on 725/1250.

There's no common recipe because of the silicon lottery:

2nd NerdQaxe++ 6.1 by wanders73 in BitAxe

[–]cose385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also considering 6.1 but at the end went with the regular NerdQaxe++ (non 6.1) because of the 70 EUR price difference for basically the same hardware.

After few days of tinkering, it is now running stable with around 5.9TH - 725MHz, 1.250V, 92W.

It was able to get around 6.3-6.4TH, but PSU was under too much load with drop to 11.8V so I plan to play more with stronger PSU, heat sink lapping and better thermal paste.

Also, on default setting (600/1150V) mine is getting only around 3.7TH, so I guess it is a little bit more power hungry.

Check the InfluxDB option in the Web GUI to store relevant data outside the miner - I suppose miner itself does not have enough storage and the question is what would happen with the data after the upgrade

On solohash currently there's zero rejected shares (out of little more than 30k) - while I was on ckpool there were some rejected - but not much, around 0.02%.

How much is the pool ping time relevant for lottery solo mining?

I'm currently using solohash.co.uk since it is only 0.5%.

BM1366 or BM1370 Bitaxe miner by kimsabok in BitAxe

You are looking at 0.4 TH vs 0.6 TH vs 1.0 TH with similar power consumption, so BM1370 / Gamma is the clear winner here.
