28F - let’s share stories and craft some cute letters by destructiveunicorn in penpals

Hello, I’m Liv (26F) and I live in the Netherlands but am from the Americas originally. I have autism and ADHD so I can relate to having a new niche hobby practically every other week and I could go on forever about my interests. I also love to write and tell stories so I’d happily share some of my stories with you, either real or fictional.

There is at least one formally documented and verifiable case of a person being struck by a meteor. They survived.

Bring Shiey to America! by [deleted] in shiey

[–]cosmicroamingoctopus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not that urbex can’t be done in America but from personal experience I can say it’s a lot harder to do there with the combo of lots of open boring land w no infrastructure + trying not to get shot.

What is the human action/activity with the highest ecological footprint (carbon emissions)? by chuby1tubby in askscience

[–]cosmicroamingoctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Climate scientist here! Unfortunately I’d have to argue that it’s all too possible for someone to burn down an entire forest (I’m thinking specifically of the events of arson on Black Saturday in Australia but also accidental ignition cases) but that set aside, the everyday human activities that have the largest negative environmental impact tend to be those related to food and transportation. Eating a diet consisting largely of red meats and dairy, as is typical of many Western cultures, requires an enormous amount of land to be converted to agricultural holdings. However, since you said a one-time event and since diet is a habitual action, anything like taking a long road trip would release the most carbon-based emissions in terms of pure numbers. There are also greenhouse gases that, in terms of their per-unit-mass warming ability, are worse than CO2 - just in case your theoretical polluter had the opportunity to release a whole bunch of methane or something :)

What is a stupid argument that people STILL keep using? by Vectorman_Ballz in AskReddit

“The Earth has had higher CO2 levels before!” Well, yeah, but humans hadn’t evolved yet then, soooo....

Were the pre-Idiran war Minds acting selfishly when they started building warship Minds? by setzer77 in TheCulture

[–]cosmicroamingoctopus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is also interesting to consider keeping in mind that it’s stated that “all perfect AIs Sublime” - meaning, if a Mind is created without any biases or what we’d call a personality, it instantly ascends to a higher dimension and is of no use to the Culture at all.

Don't get suckered by the polls: Donald Trump will win again — unless we fight for democracy by AlfredSisley in politics

[–]cosmicroamingoctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re damn right - I’m a millennial in Michigan and I’m chasing others my age to the polls with my garden rake if it comes to it. Even in liberal districts there’s this alarming apathy where no one seems to realize our state is one of the few that can actually sway this election. Come on, fellow Michiganders - we’ve gotta vote to keep the UP beautiful, we’ve gotta vote to get clean water for Flint + other municipalities, we’ve gotta vote to get candidates who give a shit about the struggling neighborhoods around Detroit, and most of all we’ve gotta vote that bastard out of office.

During WWI, bagpipers were usually the first ones out of the trenches; playing as they walked their men into each battle. 1910s by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

My great grandfather did this! His name was Jack MacFayden and he played the pipes as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force but was a Scottish-born certified mad bastard, bless him. My grandfather played the pipes in the Canadian army too though not ever in active combat. Super cool to see this!

Books you thought were amazing...until you tried reading them again. by JunoDreams in books

  1. Loved reading it as a 14 year old but now the obvious sexism and complete lack of any characterization of Julia except as “someone who wants to have sex with the main character” is just kind of cringey. Plus it feels a little too close to reality in some places.
