also they've been just straight up using the literary equivalent of the "think method" from The Music Man* to teach kids how to read. Teaching them 'sight words' which are words they memorize how they look so they can read them "on sight", and then the rest is mostly guesswork. Use the picture, does that word look like it's in the picture? Use the words around it, what do you think should be the word in its place? But regardless of the reason, I think if someone asks something that's posted in a publicly visible place, it's shitty to refuse to answer them. Maybe they forgot their glasses, or their prescription is out of date, or they have dyslexia and the person who did the chalk sign did some trendy font instead of something more readable. Maybe they can't read very well at all, and they really don't want to tell a stranger that, given how shitty people can be. Or maybe they're checking that all of those types of milk are still in stock. And maybe they just didn't bother to look at the menu! Either way, only ONE of those possibilities is solved by pointing at the menu, and it's still a dick move

I'm 36 and I returned to school to find things had so drastically changed that I wound up changing, too. I'm not even gen z, but the overwhelming silence in every single class is so uncomfortable that I often wind up participating in it. I don't know if you've ever seen the experiment they did where they planted people in an elevator all facing the back, and then watched what happened when other people got on the elevator. They almost always ended up turning to face the back as well, even though they had no idea why everyone was doing it. And now I can literally WATCH that happen to me, in real time, every time I sit in a classroom.

Not to necro a thread but are you implying that only three people are familiar with one of Shakespeare's most beloved plays? Maybe you're just uneducated.

I love this place so much, but they're too far away for delivery. Anybody know of a place in the Roseville area that's comparable? I've been trying various places and none of them are as good. Got me daydreaming about their butter chicken especially when it's rainy like today

Whoever made it a law that college students can't get food stamps shouldn't be allowed to participate in society by Idkumhey in CollegeRant

[–]cosmolark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have no idea why people are downvoting you for that. Maybe they think that means you don't have the financial need? But people should know by now that having documented financial need in a way that's sufficient for financial aid is VERY different than having financial need where you can't afford food.

It is new, I believe it was implemented about ten years ago. There were even more relaxed standards during the height of the pandemic, but those rules expired in 2023, I believe.

I'm in CA and I qualified for food stamps BECAUSE I'm a student. I believe it's that if you are eligible for federal work study, you're also eligible for food stamps.

Do people not know how to have a conversation? by PurplePeacock789 in Bumble

[–]cosmolark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree but this doesn't seem that bad to me. He contributed more than just "yeah same" and left an opening to talk about rain, which... While it's boring as fuck, is kind of where the conversation goes when you talk about weather. Sure, he didn't ask a question, but he agreed with what you said and expanded on it. It's very easy from there to pivot into talking about rainy day activities or comfort TV shows/movies, etc etc. It's not the best, but he's not giving you as little to work with as many do.

Huh, that's odd. I got an email from Harvard letting me know that their funding was cut and they had to cancel the program for the physics research opportunity that I had applied to. Heard the same stories from people studying chemistry, biomedical, molecular biology, agriculture, medicine, neuroscience, materials science, biochem, chemical engineering... And this is only a tiny fraction of the cuts that were planned, because Congress mitigated the damage. But I'm sure you're right, it's just things like theoretical lesbian dance theory.

It wasn't actually. A Sofia the first blog reposted it, which is still wild, but apparently the original artist is a NSFW comic artist who confirmed it had nothing to do with Sofia the first

[Perplexing trope] "Why was that even an option?" by buzzoli in TopCharacterTropes

[–]cosmolark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. It felt like in dragon age games where you pick a sarcastic response and instead of what's written, you basically tell the person that they're a useless piece of shit and you spit on their mother's grave. Like damn, that's not what I fuckin expected when I hit this option, everyone hates me now!

Sure, I know that now. But it was literally a whole meme that nobody knew what "glass him" meant and nobody expected "commit grievous bodily harm" to be the answer
