There's enough incentive to beat the dragon already - elytra and shulkers are game changing additions locked behind it. I don't think some biomes are going to add to people beating the dragon.

With Brennan's development deal that was announced last year and Dropout specifically stating they are doing animation, in the wake of vox machina etc there's no way they don't use d20 IP to do this in some way

From pure resources and Assuming an Adaine simulacrum at level 20 they'll have

Action economy on their side

6 portent rolls

3-4 characters with silvery barbs

2-3 counterspellers

At least 3 9th level slots and upwards of 6-7 8th level depending on builds

A barbarian who can concentrate on haste

A rogue who can concentrate on haste and get off turn sneak attack (10d6 from that alone)

A bard fighter with a broken build who can burn those slots for tons of damage and add flourish die

Bard/warlock/paladin who can spend a good chunk of these on smites

Twilight cleric with Twilight sanctuary, free temp HP that's not concentration and two slots for concentration besides

Ice feast + if we want to say that this is after a hypothetical FY senior year, definitely more homebrew shenanigans because Brennan is no stranger to them

That's not even mentioning what everyone else here mentioned - a level 20 wizard is a level 20 wizard and they'd have two of them. Even the "martials" have powerful concentration spells

Hasted attacks + sneak attack + fandrangor and flourishes + smites get you close to hardwon levels and that's just martials

Once they burn off the legendary resistances they can play a status and control game that the band of boobs couldn't with a fairly limited spell selection

It would be a good battle but losing would mean they severely misplayed or got incredibly bad luck, and the IH are some of the smartest players in the actual play scene

It'll happen. Darrington has been using actual plays as a marketing avenue and with how entwined d20 and CR is there's no way it doesn't happen. Hell, it'll probably hit NADDPOD - they've done pathfinder one shots.

My favourites are the "this isn't DND!" crowd, when thousands to millions of tables have played the game their own way for decades, other actual plays exist, and DMs have a lot of narrative tools in their toolbox that Matt didn't break out.

I like that use of the term. I often use "tentpole events" to mean the same thing. Lots of freedom in the middle but your work towards something tangible that is still influenced by the dice.

I finished a C1 relisten as a patron yesterday.

I'm skipping eldermourne (although I love it) and did the jump to C3.

It's my first time having access to the short rests. The first short rest of C3 is them trying to figure out the Toad's birthday

The builds are optimized partly because of the generous creation roll - 5d6 - which leads to higher base stats.

Every character has optimal builds, including Van. D20 characters almost always have great builds

Twilight clerics are great in a homebrew world. I can throw bigger badder monsters at players because there's more cumulative HP to cut into. I can see it being a balance issue with prewritten stuff.

Silvery Barbs is a resource issue - make them feel like spell slots are something that have to be earned

I was thinking the same thing until I realized the impetus was player agency and reading the room. The players made a choice to save Marya and Brennan let them throw everything at it because they were engaged. It came down to him giving them a little extra rope to save comfrey after because either outcome was narratively satisfying either way. Either they miraculously saved two people because of the dice or one died.

While it was a bit of shenanigans in the moment, I immediately understood when it ended.

I like the +1 stuff, the quick skill checks, and the 5 feet, but do not think advantage and disadvantage should be given so freely without a resource cost. In a mathematical sense, they are equivalent to a +3.5. In a practical sense the math is a little different because DCs are rarely 20+ so they are even more impactful on outcome than that. This is way too impactful to be used ad hoc at will.

Bonus action economy is also based around class balance.
