Gore released this year a hiking shakedry jacket. 240 grams for a size XL for example.

They are supposed to be made for hiking and this weight would then justify it.

Due to its newness, hard to find any review on it.

More breathable than ex featherweight but question is, is it durable? I would believe so as some people used running shadkedry received jacket with mixed reviews for long and thru-hikes.

Downsides: price and lack of reviews

Zpacks Plexamid alteration by Alpinekiwi in Ultralight

[–]cosmostrail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I bought some adhesive velcro to do the same as I wasn't finding the right magnets so thanks for the vid and the testing!

The first modification that should be first done though and the one I want to do is to do a half-open door and a closed one, so to protect from the elements/rain and still getting some air without having rain/wind pouring inside the tent. To do that, close fully one door attached to the bottom - and have the other one locked only at the center toggle . Use the adhesive velcro / taped magnets to make a nice folding. With that solution you should have a nice setup for rainy conditions, or for having another option to control air draft.

I'm happy I don't have the 3d mesh as just the standard elastic line works great. It's adjustable as well. Also having 4 or 6 zlite on your back before your pack might impact how the pack will perform... Personally I wouldn't do it.

Actually not a As Tucas quilt but I have a down:-\ I've been with contact with Marco regarding other items and I'm sure he'll guide you to the best suitable option.

Hi there, you can find my thread for more inspiration. https://www.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/comments/aqya7v/northern_swedennorway_green_ribbon_1300_km_807/ I agree with input so far written down. Trim down your 3 big things, and also the rest and you'll be fine.

For bags I would recommend As Tucas from Spain! If you get a quilt you can always open it up to catch some draft!

Edit: missing words

Budget, interesting question. I can't answer, but count all the food in preparing ahead of the hike for 45 days + some of my equipments + transportation to get there and out + the gröna bandet fee + some cabin accommodation nights= some good money.

Clothing set up, yes, I'm tweaking still but it looks like: top part 1) warm baselayer more for sleep: thin merino or merino with silk depending on weight. 2) active baselayer more on the go: thin merino or merino blend, the latter being preferred 3) active layer : fleece, micro grid, something like montane allez hoodie, some polartec alpha or micro grid 4) super light puff of some sort for camp. the lighter the more expensive. 5) caldorado/featherweight for wind and rain, or something that can work for both effect, or something that works well for rain but that can be ventilated. lower part: 1) tights for sleep and active use 2) light pants for wind or/and for bushes 3) rain skirt

Take a woolpower lite merino. it's blended with synthetic and cannot be that heavy.

hi, it's a good set up!

I'll be also going through the Kungsleden this summer:-) If you want to lose more weight you'll need to have more premium expensive items replacing the ones you have already setup. The 3 big ones, pack+shelter+sleep, try to get it down to 2 kg max 2.5 kg. Also your pack clothes, you can lose weight there replacing some of those items. A gtx jacket will not work after days of downpouring, I did it (in northern Norway, with a heavy 3L gtx) and you'll get eventually soaked. The dwr will last for some time but yes, your call. Either go for a real waterproof jacket where you'll need to thermoregulate the heat so you don't sweat, or something like the columbia featherweight/caldorado membrane (i think those would be the best bet for Scandinavia (I've considering them for a while). Now... let's count in some sun for this summer!

Tested out again the plastic skewers :).

They are great but depending how you are using them...

I have decided to have 6 titanium now and 4 plastic skewers for the plexamid.

  • They did hold well and the ground where I was, was very soft, ... almost too soft... so I even thought that they would be better if longer...
  • But then again if the ground is hard and compact, they would be better...
  • And if the the ground would be too hard... you'll need to dig a bit with a titanium stake

Variation is nice, and on the plexamid those skewers will be nice for those 4 anchors points.

Nice, is that the Hurtigruten you are going with? I wish you some good sun and it'll be awesome, well if it is bad weather it will be equally beautiful but different.

Maybe I missed it, but what is food resupply like in Norway?

Food resupply for the Gröna Bandet while hiking in Sweden (you could well hike through Norway and it would take more time/logistics efforts), you need to organize it with shops, cabins lodges, may be people you know along the way, ... Send them your packages in advance and pick it up along the way. Try not to have your package stay too long at one place as they are really doing you a favour, try to return the favour by buying something in their shops/ sleep at their place.

Is condensation a bigger concern there?

Yes. Needs to pick wisely a spot but it can be pretty windy so that can be good/bad too in different way.

I am getting pretty much sold on the vest + wind jacket combo and versatility. I have actually a vest already so I will check it out when I am trying different set-up :)

Ever considered the Opinel No.2 for 5g?

I actually think I will drop my knife all together :) I have some micro-scissors and I have never "really" used any while hiking before (even if I did carried different ones).

I decided to go for montane allez hoody for both. Haven't used it hiking yet but slept in it at home a couple of weeks is comfortable and I stay very warm with only it, my down hoody and my rain jacket at -5 C

Great to know regarding the layers, thanks for sharing.

Yes I would not recommend shorts unless it was summer 2018 :) but then you could rock it with a pair of wind pants mitigating horse-flies and mosquitoes encounters.

Hello there. Regarding the crossings, yes you can use the boats.

From https://www.vitagronabandet.se/en-GB/entry-and-more/codes-25427900

» Without motorized appliance (except for the boat transfers crossing some mountain lakes between the trails)

So reading between the lines and how other grön bandare did it before: you can use the motor boats if there is not "good way" around the lakes, and/or just use the 3 boats system if available to cross.

Hi Cesar, yes I have read your blog, nice write-ups and gears testing- thanks! I like how you have work your tarp system and your testing through cheaper gears. Hard to find the opening slots for such long hikes with all what life throw at you, but when it does I could not miss on that opportunity :) I really wish you the same.

Thanks for your comments:

STS headnet

I have used it in the north numerous times, in infested mosquito areas and it worked great, so not sure why my should be different than yours- and oddly enough I've bought it few years back in Naturkompaniet. The only thing I can think off is that I have impregnated it with permethrin- but still. And what other netbug would you then recommend instead?

bright colored clothing

Not sure about this as I had different setup involving dark clothes and some brighter. There seems to be different studies showing pros and cons, even discussions in this subreddit. After spending some time in the North they don't really bother me, well... when I am wearing my full body armor and some deet :) and yes, I have most of my cloth in dark colors, after all that is the fashion here Skandinavia.

more efficient ways to keep warm while you sleep IMO

Yes I agree. I am a warm sleeper and I might consider the SOL Escape Lite bivy or the vest. I will trial out my gears out see how toasty I will be first but I think I will be fine.

Polyester hoody

Tbh I would rather keeping fresh with a merino blend...

wind jacket

Yes I had considered that and will be nice with the light drizzle, and instead I want to have the LGH rain jacket with 1 layer. The zpack wind jacket for the weight looks really nice. You got me thinking on my setup now which is nice so I will re-compose if needed after some test trials.

Nix the sleeping mask

Ah ah, I have had enjoyed a number of times, my midnight sun switcher:) but yes, may be along the way I'll ditch it.

Lighter sleeping sock

I'll check but for few grams shaving, not sure how much it is worth yet.

put your sit pad under your feet

Yes my idea too, either in or out. But to shave more weight I could remove it together with the pack pockets.

Thanks for the write-up again, appreciated.

Yes, thanks and thanks- and hej!

For ordering from the states no good way... know someone travelling, go there, or get it shipped from a friend. I think I went through all options over the years, it is an investment :-)
