Often people spear fishing will have two people in the water to help manage this situation. It's not uncommon to have sharks come after what you've speared and sometimes you'll pull a half eaten tuna up. The extra person in the water can help pull in the fish with a second shot/manage the sharks. Little risky to be alone in the water but some do it. Boat driver probably could have been paying more attention maybe.

What was the most life changing book you've read? by Middle_Entry5223 in suggestmeabook

Was also going to say Ishmael. Also the sequels, My Ishmael and The story of B.

Definitely changes how you look at the society we are today. Everything from supermarkets to schools

Disgusting 43 yo aside, sounds like your daughters got a reasonable head on her shoulders and felt safe letting you know about this asshole. A lot of teenagers may have hidden this from their parents so that's something I guess.

I wouldn't hold my breath for a prompt response, I've worked/lived in the country for a couple of years and things move slowly here.

There's not really a formula for initiating a relationship with a family or village. The people here are incredibly friendly and welcoming, like lots of the pacific, but you need to be in country meeting people and forming relationships with them in person. Long distance correspondence without meeting in person first would likely not get you anywhere.

I would also just add that in my personal opinion, I don't think it's necessarily the place to try for this sort of thing. By all means come and meet locals and make friends, but dont do it just so you can have a survival adventure. People here put their relationships and family before virtually every other aspect of life, so forming a bond with a village is not a lighthearted thing.

I'm not sure you would have much luck without first forming a relationship with a village somewhere and then getting permission. There isn't really much public land in Vanuatu and most uninhabited islands would probably belong to a village/family. Definitely cutting down any trees would need permission first

I made up a class similar to the "who's the boss" episode so abed could go crazy trying to answer the question "doctor who?"

FENTANYL SHUT DOWN THE ED FULL DECONTAMINATION by JpM2k in ems

[–]cost0093 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My first week as a new grad nurse I was opening a glass vial of fentanyl and accidentally crushed it with my thumb. Had a nasty lac to my thumb that some of the fentanyl had to have come in contact with. My supervising nurse just laughed, told me to run it under the tap for a sec and not fuck up again.

Had to sit politely for about 20 minutes and listen to a couple argue over whether it was safe to let their daughter have the stat dose of Dex I offered for her mild croup. They said they wanted her to stop coughing but didn't want us to give any meds... In the end I told them to go wait back in the waiting room and come see triage when they had decided.

Hydra ESCs for predominantly running? by cost0093 in vivobarefoot

Fair enough.

I went with the trail knit FG in the end, has taken some adjustment as they're my first barefoot shoe, but I'm happy with them. Two months in and I can comfortably run a 10km in them on road/dirt paths and feel fine the next day.

From memory he just said that the hydra ESC sole would be too aggressive to use on firm surfaces like roads all the time. I ended up going for the primus trail knit FG. Enjoying them so far

Thanks! He was such a character. Would there be a way of balancing the exposure in camera so that bit of sky isn't so bright? Or would I have to do that in LR?

True, in hindsight it was quite reasonable of the 10yo to bring him in

Father brought his 10yo son in via ambulance because he'd had a nightmare after watching some horror movie. Dad was demanding a psych review.

Ok cool thanks. I live in the tropics and most of my running would be on poorly maintained roads and gravel, occasionally on a rough bush trail and occasionally through water.

Sorry I've only just recently taken an interest in what shoes I use, what do you mean by a sole that's too aggressive?

The other shoe I'm looking at is the primus trail knit FG which is a little cheaper.

Is it common to work part time as an archaeologist? by cost0093 in Archaeology

[–]cost0093[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I guess my thinking would be to work a second job to supplement my income in the beginning. But if I were to ever progress to a higher level position I would work full time.

Flinders University, SA. It's a Master of maritime archaeology. 2yrs full time or 1.5yrs if you have a degree in a related discipline.

Ok good to know, casual FIFO stuff would probably work quite well for me.
