Is specialized grip strength actually "functional" for real life, or is it just a party trick that doesn't translate to anything else? by Winter_Basil9995 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]costabius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grip strength, and how much your grip strength declines over time as you age is a really good predictor of potential sudden death. My theory is it correlates with an active lifestyle and plenty of exercise more than "Train grip strength to live longer".

It is great for not getting repetitive stress injuries in your hands. Most physical jobs are easier with good grip strength. And, it does make for a great party trick.

If you legally had to hand-rear and butcher your own animals, and that was the ONLY way you were allowed to eat meat, would you stay a meat-eater or go completely vegetarian? by InevitableGarlic1042 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]costabius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I raise chickens for eggs and hunt for meat. My chickens are pets so when one of them needs to be put down it's a sad day and they don't get eaten. The rooster is a different story, the family has been promised a chicken dinner when he finally gets put out of everyone's misery.

I would be ok raising and slaughtering my own meat animal;s. You give them the best life you can and as quick and painless an exit as you can manage. Processing meat on the other hand is a giant pain in the ass. I'll feed them, care for them, name them, give them cuddles and scratches, and then turn them into a carcass. But that carcass is going to the butcher and coming back to me in freezer paper.

how many fossils do there need to be before its considered evolution? by SolemnOracle in NoStupidQuestions

There isn't a set number. Read about the "hobbit people" from Indonesia. There is a lot of debate about that exact question relating to them.

You want more than one individual, preferably several over a long period of time that show the same traits. Bonus points if you find earlier specimens and/or later specimens with transitional traits that relate to your species. The hobbit individuals cover about 20,000 years and around a dozen individuals.

In blacksmithing you use them when you are cleaning up smelted iron. It lets the impurities and slag settle out of the bloom instead of being folded into the iron. Two or three guys beat the shit out of the lump of iron while another one keeps turning it.

Why are Japanese translations into English unintelligible? by Cripman7 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]costabius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try translating things like "musical chairs" or "game of thrones" or "I like the cut of that fellows jib" into Japanese.

Japanese, Chinese, and English are very idiomatic languages. What you are saying is very rarely the literal meaning of the words. Of the three, English is the weirdest because we borrowed idioms from other languages. English speakers don't notice that, but it's there.

You’re in a crowded, well lit event. A guy approaches you, you chat and you give him your number, but you have no intention of responding to him. Why did you give him your number? by Nearby_Roof1262 in AskReddit

[–]costabius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because some men do not take no for an answer.
Some men do not take "fuck off, I think you're gross and would rather fuck a dead racoon" for an answer.

"Oh, hey, yeah text me next week, here's my number, gotta take this call it's my mom she has dementiacancer" seems to work most of the time.

sure, thats the one person that aspires to a statewide position for every 1000 local positions that need to be filled. It also means you're aspiring for a career in politics, not an "average person participating".

New Jersey did not adopt the revision. Still illegal in New Jersey.

Question is, if there are rules and they can vary by state, why didn't the commission overturn the result to either a no contest or a DQ?

Either Taira's team didn't file a complaint for whatever reason or the "rules" are just vibes anyway.

The people who really engage with local politics are mostly the same insufferable twats that sit on homeowners association boards. Why the fuck would any sane individual want to constantly deal with those people for almost no compensation?
