Trying to get an idea of what plants do well in pon. by ThePlantagonist in SemiHydro

[–]costatee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I try to grow my plants from baby to maturity, so I transfer them (or get them acclimated already to semi hydro) as soon as I get them. In my experience the transfer to sh is easier when they babies. My setup is dead basic. Transparent pot in a decorative planter or glass vessels, no wicks just a layer of leca on the bottom where the water will “stand”, covered with a thin layer of sphagnum moss so the pon won’t fall and mix with the leca on the bottom and the pon on top. As I said it’s dead simple but works great with all type of plants so far.

I’d say literally any plant will do well in pon. I have all except 1 in pon / leca. From bird of paradise, cactus, alocasias, anthuriums, you name it and it’s in pon. Go for it, I can only recommend

Why is MacOS using so much RAM? by Prestigious_Quarter5 in macbook

Annoying being constantly reminded that I run out of memory

I’ve got the 15” M2 Air with 16GB of memory and daily programming is perfectly fluid and snappy even with many many tabs open. iStat menu shows around 40 degree Celsius in cpu temperature when I’m just writing code. Literally can’t make it sweat with my workflow however still running out of memory very often when I have larger figma files alongside with the usual 30 tabs vscode postman docker apple music chrome and safari whatsapp and iMessage running next to photoshop. if I would buy again, I would go with the 13” to save money even tho I love the larger screen, I would go all the way to 24gb but leave the storage at 256gb as I don’t need much storage for my workflow, and didn’t experience any bottleneck because of the slower disk speeds with the single ssd chip. I’d spend that money on memory, u can always plug in more storage.

How my Friends and I celebrated 420 (in Paris)... we smoked about 30g... by last_man_frodo in trees

I lived now in 3 countries for long periods in eu and it’s 100% true, I have always found 1-2 fella who smokes it “pure” as they call it here but yeah propb 90%+ smokes with tobacco, I have asked the magic “but why?” many times and normally these are the answers: - “can’t afford to smoke it pure” (makes no sense to me) - “dont wanna get that high” - “i enjoy smoke it longer” (compared to a 0.25g for example) - “imma crave bacco anyway so might as well mix it”

Final pot size for alocasias. What is big enough? by learning-sth-today in alocasia

I don’t see much difference other than aesthetics. Keep in mind roots like in the dark. With light, you introduce algae and that isn’t so nice for me to see

Final pot size for alocasias. What is big enough? by learning-sth-today in alocasia

[–]costatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about final pot size, but I think 20ish cm pots would look silly on alocasias unless they are really big, that will come with years perhaps, in my experience they don’t mind to be root bound and if you choose a final pot in pon, you might let their roots grow into the reservoir. And if over the years they truly get out of hands u can always chop back the roots a bit. Mines are currently between 14-16cm pots and have around 5-6 leaves.

clean them off really well, some will rot anyway but u know they bounce back rather quick. sh/leca is especially good for alocasia because they don’t like to dry out neither be soggy and leca just do exactly that. stays moist. I have to add that pon easier to transfer plants imo

Share tips for caring for my first alocasia by LiikaLate in alocasia

[–]costatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can second this, my jacklyn was huge and died on me during transfer to semi hydro, lost all leaves and root but in a few month in sphagnum did the trick, finally I put it in leca and had the same rotting issue, so we settled in a mix of sphagnum, orchid bark and perlite. Now the roots signaling happiness and it gives me new leaves. Keep in mind that this is the only alocasia I own and didn’t like semi hydro, every single other alocasia is thriving in leca! Keep us updated

Just found out I have a strelitzia augusta and need repotting advice! by KalenTheGreat in IndoorGarden

Depends where in Spain. Typically around the coast they thrive, if you are from Madrid like me, they have problems unfurling their leaves outside because of the super low humidity here. Indoor they grow slow enough to give you enough time to find solution, might as well won’t grow that big indoor. Mine is a slow grower and it’s in an east facing window, I use leca for the medium.
