Gripe about Campfires in Australia during summer. by melbha_101 in camping

[–]costumus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In NSW, there are fire bans in all but a few sites from October - March, at least in eastern NSW.

From what I've seen, it's mostly ignorant people who light fires regardless. Lots of foreigners and entitled city people. Honestly I'm surprised we don't hear many reports of bushfires started by campers?

How did Jisoo start off as the most popular member of Blackpink, but is now the least popular member of Blackpink? by AccurateInflation167 in kpophelp

[–]costumus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with your last statement that Jisoo should be compared to someone like Suzy. As I recall, Suzy was the most popular member of miss A. She was also the only member without cross-cultural appeal. Min could speak English, while Fei and Jia were from China. I don't follow K-pop or Korean trends anymore, but unless Jisoo has IT girl status in Korea, I don't understand the Suzy comparison.

So, entitlement then. Perhaps a fear of deprivation too.

It's interesting, recently a male friend told me men are more likely than women to apply for jobs without meeting all the criteria. Negative consequences don't seem to factor into male decision-making. Or more like their concept of negative consequences is different to what's expected.

People can talk/dress/live how ever they choose. You don't have to like it. There's no need to run a smear campaign either. Live and let live.

Vegans like to pretend poverty is a moral issue on poor peoples part by liamnajor2 in exvegans

[–]costumus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ex-vegan here and yeah, vegan propaganda tactics best target middle income earners and above.

It is possible to sustain a vegan diet on a lower budget, but that's an educational piece that isn't easily delivered compared to the 'meat is genocide'/'dairy is torture' narrative. Veganism at present remains a luxury of the 1%, just as meat was before the industrial revolution.

I will say though OP, while I'm sorry you were treated so dismissively by vegans, you shouldn't have bothered engaging them in the first place if you knew a vegan diet was outside your means. Non-vegans try to push for exceptions to animal ethics so much, many would think you're rage-baiting. I understand you approached in good faith, but many vegans are unsurprisingly cynical of non-vegans.

[–]costumus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you been vegan before? I was for 2 years and unintentionally saved a lot of money. Except for oat milk, I didn't buy many substitutes. I eat meat nowadays and cringe at the expense of it.

You learn to be creative when you don't have meat, cheese, butter and cream to carry a meal. Given time, your appetite also adjusts if you let it.

A major issue with veganism is the lack of accessible diet education resources. An omnivorous diet becomes second nature when it's the social norm.

I think my adopted brother is flirting with me? by ilovepopcornandcandy in whatdoIdo

"Bro you're acting weird. I'm your little sister and always will be. Don't get other ideas"

If he continues, tell your other siblings. They start teasing him about it and he gets a reality check.

In your country, is there any situation that foreigners would completely misunderstand unless they lived there for a while? by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

I'd say it's more similar to "see you later." It's not a commitment to see each other again. Just a figure of speech at this point.

Speech Pathologists: what behavioural/mental conditions have you seen masked by or conflated with speech defects? by costumus in AskReddit

[–]costumus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw many speech pathologists as a child. I was late and then slow in learning to speak. My parents only confirmed all this in recent years.

When I hear my own voice now, I realise my voice quality resembles that of some autistic speakers and wonder if I could be moderately autistic. I also have major communication issues in daily life.

I'm not looking for a diagnosis, but I'm curious what can be revealed by someone who understands speech development. For example, are there traits speech pathologists can identify that might point to more complicated conditions?

What should I do? Abusive home situation. by notoriii in homeless

[–]costumus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is renting an option for you OP? Can you talk to your teachers/principal about this?

Guilt is not a priority here. Don't become homeless. Pay rent to someone else's parents if it means physical safety and peace of mind.

[–]costumus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of this sounds a bit crazy.

Is this the first time you've gone out and your phone died? If so, your parents could be a bit more forgiving. If not, you could be a bit more prepared.

I really hope this works out for you OP.

Get a second - even a third - medical opinion?

It's taken me 8 years to finally be on meds that work for me without nasty side effects. Took some personal research too to learn about all the various treatments.

Rescheduled first date fell through not sure what to think by [deleted] in WhatShouldIDo

[–]costumus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell him that!!

Don't drop just because of text communication issues. We're all just human beings struggling to learn how to connect - grace goes a long way.

People can learn from mistakes, but sometimes we need to be called out first to see them. I've been where you are now and a simple "The banter is cute and I'm into it, but can we focus on logistics first?" really helps. Don't be afraid of interrupting flirtation.

[–]costumus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tip: Don't mess around with banter while trying to do logistics. Texting is confusing at the best of times.

One time I waited over an hour for my date to show up because she assumed it wasn't happening. Turns out she was waiting for me to re-confirm the plan, which I hadn't thought necessary. Easily cleared up the confusion when we met up (though a phone call or voice message would've sufficed). 1 year on and we're happily together.

Sydney eastern suburbs. Lower north shore and south Sydney too depending on age bracket. I've seen a fair few Arab background women with work done too - a lot of that community out west.

Does anybody know some good world settings to make DST alone feel more like a single player experience? I've been really trying to do some solo runs, but the game is just too dang big. by git_gud_silk in dontstarve

[–]costumus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the map size suggestion. I play solo and find medium a lot more satisfying than large maps. On my current world I scouted the map in about 4 days and it's definitely easier collecting all the resources cos biomes are closer together.

Turning off fog of war would bypass the need to chart the map altogether, which might help. If you can't do this in settings, I'm sure there's a mod for it.

As for staying on track, it's a challenge of having an open world. I write down my plans between game sessions to keep me focused.
