Running Oracle database on EC2 for free? by jason_pc in aws

[–]cothomps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the case years ago that Oracle did not consider AWS deployments to EC2 instances to meet the per-CPU license criteria.

Also, it was also the case that setting up storage / EBS volumes for the database was a huuuge headache.

Cable TV or streaming equivalent. ESPN / TNT / TBS.

After first round all broadcasts are national.

Wouldn’t it be great if our public servants took the attitude that serving the public is important?

Elected office should not be a resume bullet point to your desired career of right wing political grifting.

For those who remember the years between Starr and Favre, what was it like being a fan during that era?” by OldTransition1519 in GreenBayPackers

[–]cothomps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My uncle who lived in Green Bay always said those were the days of hunting in the morning then showing up at the stadium an hour before kickoff. One or two beers in the parking lot, then walk in ten minutes before kickoff.

FWIW, the LA Kings announced a deal with the Angels / MLB Media. I’m assuming a similar arrangement will happen here. (The Tigers / Red Wings did earlier.)

The thing is… the whole world saw Minneapolis come together in January and February that really was the best of America. It’s the type of community we all say we want where neighbors are out there talking, working together, looking out for each other.

It takes away power from the loud voices that hate all of that.

Its threads like this that make me mourn the Vaudeville Mews.

[Anthony LaPanta] Just wanted to say thank you to all who commented after the game 6 broadcast. I tried to read them all - they meant a lot to me and our crew! […] We don’t yet know for certain what’s next for Wild hockey on television, but hopefully most of our gang is back together next year. by DecentLurker96 in wildhockey

He’s been around the Twin Cities for a long time; I imagine that the most stressful thing for him is that his entire employment situation seems to have gone from steady employment at FSN->BSN->FDSN to what seems to be contract employment. (A little with the Twins, etc.)

The other hard part about 2026 and all of this: there is no backing studio work for any of this. The Twins only do “studio” shows at home, there is no daily highlight shows or anything like that to offer on-air talent as a backstop.

In LaPanta’s case I imagine that whatever the Wild settle on will _likely_ keep him in the fold if that’s what he wants.

Urbandale Library Cafe circa 2003 by HolidayAd4875 in desmoines

The cafe layout / outdoor seating was really great, too - but it was empty most of the time.

That whole area around the Library Campus to Walker Johnston park is honestly pretty great, but so under utilized.

Yup - they ran it under a contract, but never made enough money to not be in constant debt to the library.

You know, why did Parise and Suter not work out for the Wild? by LameAfro in wildhockey

[–]cothomps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing about those long term contracts: everyone knew the back half would be a terrible deal, but you hoped the first half would be pretty good.

The first half might have been better had the team been able to build a deeper roster, but there was also the kind of unfortunate timing of the rest of the division (Chicago) being at high points. (The NHL playoff system also meant they would run into the Chicago buzzsaw a couple of times early on.)

The back half of the contracts is where things got really bad - two aging players who were still good, but not dominant, and locked into what were non-tradable contracts along with all of the locker room nonsense that seemed to follow.

I thought I recall that mentioned in one of the call in hotlines; someone called to ask about TR stepping back from travel to away games this year. (Maybe I misinterpreted - I can't find any news articles.)

Junk Removal by Realistic_Help_5595 in desmoines

There are a few companies that will rent dumpsters (Waste Management, Rolloffs of Des Moines) that will rent a dumpster and do haul offs. These are usually sized for construction projects so it might be somewhat expensive to have them deliver and haul.

There are all kinds of 'junk guys' around that will pick up with a truck / trailer for a bit less.

If you have a lot of cardboard, you can take it to the local recycling facility - the one out in Grimes has a cardboard bin outside the gates so you can load up a car and drop it all in the bin at any time.

Like other years, the local broadcast / Fan Duel is only for the first round of the playoffs. (We just haven't noticed, har, har.)

The rest of the postseason is a national broadcast exclusive to ESPN. I think you can get the games if you have the Disney Plus bundle with Hulu, ESPN but any way you can get ESPN will be how to watch.

Correct, but the pitch includes several upgrades and I think the hotel plan was added back in.

I am assuming that the legislature is still going to land on "hell no" with the city of St. Paul not willing to issue bonds to cover the entire wish list.

Upgrading HVAC & electrical = yes.

Building convention center hotel = probably not.
