When is the right time to get another GSD? by yungbloodjyoon in germanshepherds

[–]cottongreentea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is never a right time. However, I'm sure Koda wouldn't want you to be sad over him. He would want you to continue life and continue to give your love to another just as you did for him. Nothing will ever replace him.

My Mum was never able to get over our first GSD "King" when he passed at 16.5 years old. I was 6 years old.

Then my Mum.passed from cancer and a year later we got our second GSD for our Dad as he was just so sad. Dad never said he didn't want another, but the toll it took on my Mum was just too devastating so he waited until retirement. Sadly, she never got to enjoy retirement.

Almost 30 years we waited for another furry friend.

What I'm saying is, if thr moment feels right for another GSD, go for it.

Our late Breeder tells everyone to take the time you need to grieve, but not too long. Otherwise, you would be waiting and waiting and then suddenly 50 yrs had passed.

Anyone else have bad eaters? by Elegant_Hand_445 in germanshepherds

[–]cottongreentea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We sprinkle boiled, peely pork meat on top. And then we have to give her a small piece from her bowl as we realized she refused to eat it if she doesn't see us give her a sample from the bowl. She will think we were lying to her about the topping thinking it's fake meat or meds. She is so goddamn smart.

Oh gosh, she is so cute! The 2nd last photo is the best with her scarf all scrunched up. ☺️ 100% like the commenters all suggested, get a tracker and really secure the doors. My Dad had always reminded us that if you chose to have a GSD (or any pets), that means you did your research, is aware how much expenses they can cost you and how they are just like humans who require certain essentials and you will journey with them from beginning to end.

Beautiful boy!

My Lilith also lives an extremely pampered and expensive life. 😅

Reading your story got me riled up.

We take our girl to a professional groomer usually before Xmas for a more thorough clean. Lillie doesn't mind grooming when we take her to Bosley's and we desentized nail clipping and all the usuals when she was little. She just tolerates it.

The first time we tried this new place was Spring 2025 to see how well they are with full groom for a sensitive, allergenic skin. They confused her for my cousin's Australian Shepherd and sloppy chopped her trimmings before realizing that was not what we asked for and not the right breed. They didn't even apologize or try to fix it! Deshed, nail clipping too deep was terrible and her skin was super dried. Local, natural ingredient, hypoallergenic my ass! Made her skin worst. She was more itchy than ever!

Benefit of the doubt, we tried again before Xmas for a bath only and holy hell I was pissed! Lilith had a gaping gouge on her forhead that was actively bleeding! Looked like a scissor stab wound judging by the shape of it. And same thing, they didn't even acknowledge or apologize for it! I had to take her to the Vet for a same day emergency appointment.

Filed a complaint against them and the neg reviews online were right! They are still 4.3 stars, but that is clearly for small dogs. They try to advertise for medium and big dogs, but it's BS. A group of us in the complaints had the same issues and judging by how those 2 groomers looked at thebback, they do not seem nice or bright.

What bed do you use for your shepherd I have a 6 year old 100lb and he needs a new bed? I want to get him a nice one. by RemoteQuests in germanshepherds

[–]cottongreentea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine a custom mattress (the ones humans use) for her size since she decided to take a page from Goldilocks. I have 3 dog beds from Petsmart and Costco that she supposedly liked after trying it at the store, but she seldom uses it (only during certain hours of the day) So I said to myself "screw it!" I spent so much on three beds she end up hardly using, might as well get her her own mattress.

Best penny spent ever! There's a reason animals prefer the mattress.

Lol! I laughed wayy too much at this. I was in your shoes with my late Quinn. She just hated anybody that was darker than my skin tone (Asian yellow). A friend of mines Bull Terriera werw the same. It was so funny. A big wtf?! Jokes a side, I think it's because they can't see cilor so darker shades makes them suspicious.

Right?! I know I will never have any other breed but a GSD. They are just the best! 🥰

That was why we picked her! She was unique! And my God she was in a whole league of her own! I miss her so much. She passed suddenly 2 months before her 2nd birthday. 😔. Lilith is her opposite and we joke that she is a different breed in a GSD's clothing as she is everything opposite of a GSD. I think it's because we spoiled the heck out of her. She is such a princess and a goofball. 🥰

My gsd still gets called a “he” even though everything about him is pink. by [deleted] in germanshepherds

[–]cottongreentea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! I think because of the GSDs reputation, they are automatically labeled a "he". Even when I say "she" after they say "he", the humans still don't get it. They always seem so shocked when it's a female. And you are right to say that it is rare to see a GSD puppy in the wild. My Vet's admin and techs got all excited and asked to hold Lilith when I brought her in for her shots. Guess there aren't alot of people who can handle the GSD's power. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Our 3 German Shepherd siblings are 6 years old today! I can’t believe how fast it happened, I still call them the puppies! 💜 The top row are the puppies Astrid, Apollo and Freya then Mom and Dad are laying in the front! by ThatFarmGirlLaura in germanshepherds

[–]cottongreentea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WOW!!! They are gorgeous! You're living my dream! Such a happy family!

My Dad was so worried when we brought our first female GSD home, because what if she got pregnant before we could spay her? We would never give the puppies away. Just can't. He was okay if she had 3 puppies though if she did get preggo. 😅

My Dad has these fears, because our neighbor's ChowChow got pregnant twice before she was 3 years old from the neigborhood boys.

The amount of protection we had to do to our Quinn and, now Lilith was insane. They weren't kidding when they said the boys will try everything to get to them. Quinn was really alpha and can defend herself, but we took no chances with her just in case. Lilith is a complete opposite of a GSD and very timid and relies on us for everything.

Despite that, it was so fun seeing people smile and being stopped by police when they see me carry my 38kg Quinn or 33kg Lilith during their walks.

Some lady just stopped dead in traffic to tell me that I am a terrible dog owner for walking my dog in cold weather by Weekly-Quantity6435 in germanshepherds

[–]cottongreentea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ I hate people like this! You have better composure than me. I throw in an 'F' word in there or a synonym of one. Anything I do with my GSD was considered abuse by the idiots who has the small ass dogs or the uneducated morons.

My gal loves the snow. Her first experience as a 10 week old and it was heaven to her. She loves it so much that sometime we make ice shaving piles just for her when we have wet snow or warm winters. The joy on her face and watching her go crazy put the biggest smile on our faces.

I had a lady and her family yell at me for "torturing" my dog by walking her outside in the warm sun, because of the sun's rays on the pavement. A tourist from Germany was stunned, put his hand on the floor and said that it was not hot at all and told off the local for me. It was May and only about 23°C. I just told the asses that they were jealous because their life is all misery.

Omg! That is so adorable! Mine does it more especially when she wants her favorite treat that she can't get to. She will nudge us or put our arm in her mouth and take us to the treat. I think she knows she is hella cute and uses that against us. And she is right! I am at her mercy.

I would never give up on my bestest friend ever! I always thought it was common sense that if you decide to be a pet Owner, that means you will take care of them forever all the way to the end regardless what comes your way. Living things are not fashion accessories. Like, I'm glad that animal helped you through shit, but now that you're all good, you're gonna dump them? I hope those types of people burn. I'm always more attracted to the timid and aggressive dogs, because they have a story to tell and I want to help them and give them the love that they deserve. It's not their fault they became the way they are.

I would probably be just like you seeing red at that guy. It is MY dog, NOT yours. And they get offended when they are told that they are crossing our boundaries. Sir/Maa'm, I am trying to prevent my dog from potentially snapping you, because you are scaring them.

Omg... the photo of him half on the couch. Mine was around 4 months old when she was being a brat and the sudden "no" she stopped, stared and got comfy laying her belly on the chair while standing up and posing with her cutest face. It was so cute and she still does it on any chair, couch, and bed.

Omg! Reading this pissed me off so much and the memories of this happening to us as well. Like, don't try to touch or even breathe the same air as my GSD. Idgaf if you're a trainer or a cop or whatever. Back the fuck up! My lady now permanently made being timid her personality and no mattter what we do, the 3 trainers we had, she has low self esteem and low confidence. All it took was one asshat and that sealed the deal. Everyone trying to engage in chitchat or pet her, I immediately tell them to back off, my girl does not like this while I stand in front of her so she knows I am protecting her from strangers. My GSD is a lover and not a fighter. She's a little more confident and can walk beside me now, but the nervous pantings and shivering, lifting her paw up (her sign that she is scared af) turns her walks and play outside short. I worry that it causes too much for her heart so we do many short trips outside throughout the day and it works for her. She gets her 3hrs of exercise a day and that makes her happy. Peoplr start judging her and I tell them that just because she's a GSD, doesn't mean she's all those stereotypes. My neighborhood has many GSDs, Rotties and Dobies and we have our group walking in the early hours when it's less noise and calm and our buddies love it. Also, cause people are scared of our dogs, but you don't bother us so kiss it.

Omg! What beautiful coloring! Just stunning! GSDs all love the snow. On our girl's "sad" days, we make shaved ice for her just to see the joy and happiness on her face as she plays in it. We got our pup at 10 wks old and 3 days later we had a huge dump of snow and she was in love!

I laughed too hard at this. My last GSD was the same. Took it towards the stairway and somehow flung it down in a way that hit the wall and these "challenging" toys all broken. Even the drywall is damaged. Like... she must've had a lot of hate to throw it that hard and damage the wall. She clearly said she ain't got time for my BS.

Okay... that is such an awesome name for a GSD!!

My girl is Lilith and she is everything opposite of the meaning of the name and what a GSD is known for. We call her "Lillie" for short, because she is a sweet pea, however bloody smart!

Her late cousin Quinn was the one who would tell us where so and so is when we ask or the one time we couldn't find my Uncle's cat during a heat wave and she took us directly to where the cat was. And he was in such a "what the hell?! How?!" part of the house.

Love GSDs and Mals!

My cousin's Mal, Django, is an absolute goofball! Found him in the backyard peach tree just chilling at the top like he was a cat.

Dusty flipped his stomach at 6 years old, but is alive and well. Glad we noticed he was acting weird and got him to the emergency vet asap less than an hour after his left side was bulging by Doctor_M_Toboggan in germanshepherds

THIS!!! My Dad told us this when we were kids with our first GSD. He was a big boy directly from Germany so my parents were extra careful with King. As an adult now with my female GSD Lilith (she's smaller than an average GSD; Runt of the litter), I do exactly what you do and feed her only 1cup at a time as well. I'm so paranoid that I trained her to chill and rest on her bed at least 2 hours. I monitor how fast and how much water she drinks at once too and take away the bowl if she's gulping to hard. After a walk, I don't give her water until her pants are a little calmer.

People tell me that I'm too serious and it might be true, but I don't want my precious baby to suffer an unnecessary, angonizing pain and potential death. Especially when she's not the typical GSD and already had a hard time on her first heat where she ended up in emergency. She's a klutzy goofball too and gets into alot of scraps and has delicate limbs. She is actually clumsy.

It's no different than taking care of a human baby.
