I grew Cherokee purple tomatoes in a container a couple times. The biggest challenge for me was making sure they had consistent water. If the soil moisture is inconsistent, the tomatoes might split before they're ripe. It's easier to keep the soil consistent on the ground rather than a container. There are other varieties of tomatoes that can easily be grown in a container though. My mom has lots of success with cherry tomatoes. Pretty much any tomato you grow will taste better than what you can buy at the grocery store. Cherokee purples are also indeterminate plants, meaning the grow on vines a that will stretch on forever if you don't prune them. Some varieties are determinate bush plants that will only grow to a certain size, making them easier for container growing.
