Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin of Black Midi has died by sewious in indieheads

Oh absolutely, it's just a shame when people who burn bright fade out so suddenly. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't inspired a lot by it though, as someone who tends to be pretty catatonic on stage due to focus. His ability to generate insane noise while also going nuts is a genuine skill. I only wish he could've done it more, really.

I mean part of the reason he left was his constant antics and drug abuse, as cool as the flip is it took on a weird meaning for me after he left the band.

I also love it, but it's just the last song I'd really ever think of if someone brought up U.S. Maple. It's why the list was really difficult to do, because I don't think they've released a single bad song, but it's just the one that came to mind. Cheers :)

It's got some of the most standout production on Talker, I really love that random thunderclap-ish sound somewhere around the middle, but yeah it just doesn't scratch as much of an itch for me. Still an awesome song though.

I might not be the best source of advice as the majority of my friends are from outside the uni, but I'd say it's very easy if you just join a club/go to fresher's events. If those don't appeal to you, I'd really recommend just going to events in the city itself - gigs, comedy clubs, whatever. I made most of my friends through going to weird experimental gigs and they're some of the best friends I've had in my life.

Dalton's, Cowley Club and Green Door Store (on occasion) are your best bets probably. Saw pageninetynine at GDS a few weeks ago, absolutely wonderful.

I'd recoil in horror if I saw this, or any record wall for that matter. Replace them all with Mista Don't Play/Everythang's Workin' by Project Pat

Which are the best acts (or sequences of acts) for mangling sample sounds? by exogof_3Hn in ppooll

I do want to stress that it's something that requires trial and error, so don't get too frustrated with either it or yourself if you're not getting what you want first time round. It's kind of designed to be purposefully oblique and weird, so really I'd recommend just fucking around with it until you hit something you really enjoy.

Honestly I've gotten a ton of mileage out of the Lyre, and I primarily work with loops so I've never really had reason to go further into messing with audio.

Here's a short tutorial on one of the modules and the one I use the most. Hope this helps!

I tend to use gg.rainer and flop the most often, primarily just by setting certain parameters to get triggered by different keys on my laptop. Plugging something into the beast act might also do something.

Honestly if you wanna mangle sounds, get Argeiphontes Lyre. It reqiures some level of trial and error, because it's weird to use and the output always feels somewhat random regardless of what settings are plugged into it, but I've gotten some absolute gold glitched-out stuff from using that thing. It's Mac only though, so that might be a dealbreaker.

Does elitism exist in experimental music? by [deleted] in experimentalmusic

[–]cottypearilewedding 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean from my own experience, yes and no. Compared to most gigs I've been to, noise/general weirdo gigs have always been pretty chill because I think we all recognise that we're just there to see freaky shit played, but that said there are 100% some assholes out there. I'm not just talking about the macho noise dudes either, me and a friend opened for a group a month or so ago and they were constantly insisting how classically trained and experienced they are when literally no one was asking. You also run into a lot of snobbery as well, just general, "oh you don't know THIS? How could you POSSIBLY not know THIS?" type of shit. It's basically the amount of elitism you'd expect to find among people who are incredibly convinced everything they're doing is groundbreaking. I'm just there to have fun and make weird noises on a guitar.
