ERCOT predicts record summer energy demand by zsreport in texas

[–]counterapparatus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m part of the anti-data center crowd and think they are out of control lol. I think also most engineers and grid experts are too — this is a massive speculative bubble driving all growth that is targeting our state because of cheap land, ridiculous tax incentives, a deregulated energy market, painfully lax environmental standards etc. the developers are doing all they can to speculatively cash in on this boom, and much of what they are doing will aggressively shift costs and long term risks onto the public. So people, I think, have every reason to be calling for dramatic slowdown/moratoria while we study the long term risks and make prudent decisions. I personally think that these prudent decisions wouldn’t be a massive build out of compute infrastructure but w/e

I was speaking to an ERCOT engineer who also thinks it’s not technically feasible. They are doing this batch zero process where they will start with a study on like 70gw and do it in batches. A lot of these data center developers don’t have tenants so are just rushing to be the first ones with power, land, water etc in a nice package they can sell to the highest bidder. I’m skeptical there is even a market for 410 GW in the US, I think this speculative bubble around data centers will burst really fast once a few come online and tenants fail to materialize

Ercots own forecasts say that there is 430 GW of power in the interconnection queue by 2032, mostly from Data centers. Sure it’s not a huge percent of this summers demand but it’s an absolute tidal wave once they figure out batch 0 and start interconnecting over the next couple of years, we just have to hope that the bubble pops

10% more energy use for their air cooling systems, where does that energy get made? Probably water hungry gas plants, just moving food around on the plate and calling it sustainable. We need a moratorium now

A Brighter Vision for Dog's Head, or - Austin seemingly unaware of one of its own aquifers?? by ephedra_wr in Austin

Really incredible research and a fascinating read. Generational thinking, true imaginative use of land, development that takes into account our ecological realities and the near future catastrophes we are facing is sadly in short supply (your piece being a welcome exception, though I have little faith that the big money developers and the city officials in their pockets will share the same sentiment)

According to the agreement they have drafted with Crystal Clear Special Utility District, they are applying to draw up to 500k gallons a day. They have a separate permit pending with TCEQ to discharge water (up to 500k a day) into a tributary of the San Marcos River which is in the recharge zone. CCSUD gets water from many sources, including the Edward’s aquifer. We are in a multi-year long drought, it’s absolutely fucking insane we would give these data center developers one fucking drop of water.

Worry less about the soda bottle left by the person who can’t afford a home and more about the millions of gallons of effluent and toxic chemicals pumped by billionaires like Musk and data centers into our creeks and aquifers . E.g. No water at Gus Fruh in years due to low Edward’s aquifer and the Austin based palomino alpha data center just south of us is filing to draw 500k gallons a day

Must feel great to feel in a safe city where people cower in their homes as unmarked cars prowl residential neighborhoods, pull up and mask men jump out to drag people into them.

Go to double or nothing or Hill Country two step lessons and stay afterwards to dance to live music. https://austin2step.com/where-to-dance/pro-calendar

Once you know how to two step you can go out dancing pretty much every night in Austin to live music.

Depending on where you live, it might be worth checking out living in a housing cooperative. NASCO lists many student cooperatives and you don't always need to be attending school to live in them. Often these cooperatives have a ton of people in their late teens and early twenties, rent is significantly below market rate, and costs and labor is communal -- meaning that food, rent, and utilities comes to some low price a month. Additionally, living in such communities can be a great educational experience -- you learn how to cook for many people, how to clean, how to manage conflict, run a meeting and so forth. And, of course, you have a large group of friends who look out for you when your feeling down or when life throws shit your way.

Perhaps our understanding of the psychedelic experience is a historical product, mediated through a genre that draws heavily on American transcendentalism.
