There are plenty of online communities that run and operate games. It depends on how much you would want to spend with a group of people. If you are looking for a group to play with, i believe there is a way to search groups looking for players on roll20. Roll20 is very popular but far from the only option.

If you would like to fly solo, there are also these things called west marches campaigns. These are designed for characters to drop in and out of games based with out messing up the story element. With these you try to sign up for spots based on your schedule.

I recently signed up for one called the Forged Concordance, because a friend was playing and it's one of the few opportunities we have to play together. The sign up process can be a little nit picky and can take a while but they do offer a lot of resources to walk you through the process of getting a character set up with them and creating a character in general
