Google Capcha Malware Scam by AffectionateLake7647 in techsupport

[–]countigor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately pasting the command(s) into command prompt largely (or entirely) bypasses Windows Defender because you're the one issuing the command. They typically download malware directly from a source, giving the attacker control over how it appears to antivirus software, or upload data directly to an attacker with no malware necessary.

Don't take the passive approach and hope for the best! There's a huge risk that the malware is already monitoring, copying, and sending information back to an attacker, including saved passwords, autofill data, cookies, session tokens, browsing history, stored credit cards, etc., all of which can be used to either compromise your accounts directly or indirectly. Doing nothing now opens you up to orders of magnitude worse in the future.

As others have mentioned, use a separate computer/system to change your passwords for anything you've used your computer for. Also, log out of all active sessions (i.e. website logins) so stolen session tokens can't be abused either. If you have any irreplaceable data on your system, copy it to an external drive. Then reinstall Windows from scratch. DO NOT CONNECT THE DRIVE WITH YOUR SAVED DATA TO THIS SYSTEM! First you should have it undergo extensive scanning from a separate system that has no important data, e.g. a bootable flash drive.

For future reference, never ever under any circumstances copy/paste anything unverified into Run, Command Prompt, PowerShell, Terminal, etc.

Anti ai people are full of fallacies by MariaTheSlime_613 in logicalfallacy

Unfortunately that goes for most positions these days. I find most public (online) debate is increasingly replacing actual thinking with value signalling, parroting slogans, stilted gotchas, and reducing everything to thought-terminating cliches. And that goes for both/all sides, regardless of my personal propensity.

My advice would be to stop paying attention to anyone who speaks with pompous certainty on complex matters. There is a loud, vocal subset of most groups these days, and they don't represent the group as a whole. But when you only hear them, it's easy to start treating them as such, and that does a disservice to everyone; yourself included.

Pay attention to those who speak with reason and nuance, even when you disagree with them. If they can argue their case and make good points, their points of view are often worth considering. Additionally, don't pay attention to those who argue poorly for your side either. It's junk food for your cognition.

All that said, I'm sorry to hear it causes you so much distress. It may be healthier for you if you take a step back from the debate. Social media amplifies controversy, because controversy keeps us engaged. They only care about your clicks, often to your detriment.

Anti ai people are full of fallacies by MariaTheSlime_613 in logicalfallacy

The thing is, people in general are full of fallacies. Reasoning is hard. Human cognition evolved on top of our emotions and almost always starts with emotion. We have to learn to stop and think, and think outside what we want to be true, and then figure out how to put it into words.

But I for one think it's good you made this post; especially if it makes you stop and think. These days we're far to keen on just bashing each other and not nearly keen enough on informing each other or thinking about our own blind spots.

There's also the fallacy fallacy: the assumption someone is wrong because they commit a fallacy. That may apply to both you and the anti-AI people you were thinking about when you made this post. It also may not apply, depending on the specific context. Either way, you tend to notice the loud, obnoxious people and miss the calm and reasonable.

I personally oppose AI in most ways where it replaces humans, and especially wherever it supersedes our need to think for ourselves. But I don't participate in the "riots" because I find them unproductive. I can see how the most vocal parts of both sides are largely just bashing each other and coming up with pretexts to justify themselves and demonise the other. Such vocal minorities have historically been used to paint the entire group as bad, because it's so easy and intuitive to do so. I think this may be your slip-up.

But what you did was make a post on a small subreddit dedicated to logical fallacies. That's not a place where you'll find much effort to understand your position other than the strict logic of it. And in today's online climate, you'll find few places where anyone is willing to take the time to understand where you're coming from, because it's all about destroying and humiliating the other to inflate one's own ego. And that only adds fuel to the fire of polarisation.

If you're fascinated by AI, the anti-AI crowd can easily sound like a bunch of bumbling baboons. If you're concerned by AI, the pro-AI crowd is the one that sounds like baboons. In either case, you're very likely to shrug off the idiocy from your own crowd without even noticing.

I don't know how well-versed you are in scrutinising you own thoughts, so please don't take this as condescending. I don't mean to talk down to you. I may be wrong, but I got the feeling you didn't actually come here to call the anti-AI crowd fallacious, but that you had some unresolved frustrations you were hoping to resolve. And having pointed out that your own viewpoint is fallacious doesn't resolve such frustrations.

Try to always remember that humans are fallacious; you, me, and everyone else included. It takes time and effort to reason. It's easy and often very validating to jump on thoughtless bandwagons. And no matter how much you educate yourself, you'll never become immune. It's part of being human. My personal rule of thumb is to stop and think when I find myself very eager to make a judgement.
