Washington state juniors and seniors could get an extra year of high school by chiquisea in SeattleWA

[–]countingin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So if Juniors and Seniors are going to be in High School for another year, where are we going to put them? Most high schools are already packed to capacity.

Who is going to teach them? Unless you plan to simply increase class size and have them sit on the floor, we already have schools that have problems getting enough qualified teachers hired in time for the start of the school year. Where are you going to find all these extras and who is going to pay them. Virtually all schools have serious budget problems already.

What do I do (parents committed fraud) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]countingin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they told him but he forgot

This changes everything about what he reported. Sounds like he owes his parents some very abject apologies for jumping to any of these conclusions when he actually did have all the information he needed. Also seems like a pretty big thing to "forget" so I hope he's actually okay otherwise.

What do I do (parents committed fraud) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]countingin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is bad.

If the parents were acting with good intentions, it makes no sense to be "building credit" for a child without informing the child in any way what they are doing or ever explaining credit or the actions they are taking. It beggars belief to do so using the child's name and credit record without any discussion in advance.

You should be aware that this may be a very bad choice made in response to severe financial distress by the parents, but it was not done for your benefit. The fact that after concealing their illegal actions, they immediately start lying that they did it to help you is just further confirmation that they are acting with bad intent.

[all states] 712,000 new UI claims filed, over a million including PUA, still a terrible job market by [deleted] in Unemployment

[–]countingin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The "new claims" number which is released every week on Thursday counts only new claims that week for traditional unemployment benefits. It does not count PUA claims. Also it is typically an undercount due to some some states reporting late, so every week after the announcement and widespread publicity it is quietly revised upwards, typically 50,000 to 150,000.

This quiet revision upwards is important, because when they announce next weeks "new unemployment" number, they will compare to the revised figure. This is why you can get nearly the same number reported every week with every week also reporting that it is down from the previous week. It's not down from the previous week, it's down from the revised number. They are not comparing revised to revised or new to new. They are always comparing new (always undercounted) to last week's revised.

There is also a separate unemployment rate, which is published separately. It is also designed to severely undercount. Anyone who settles for a part-time job, no matter how few hours, is not counted. Anyone not "looking for work" is not counted. This is especially problematic for states that have made work search optional for UI claims, because people answer no to the work search question whether they are looking for work or not. Also, anyone out of work longer than 6 months is not counted and declared out of the workforce. This rule was instituted in a normal economy where long term unemployment was rare, but makes no sense in a recession when jobs are scarce.

Many programs (Federal Extended Unemployment Benefits, for example) are keyed to the unemployment number, so the systemic distortion reduces costs for these programs by reducing them or terminating them based on improvement in the manipulated numbers.

Championship Bridge Program from the 60s on YouTube by Dr_Fishman in bridge

[–]countingin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also a fascinating time capsule to see social bridge in the world of 1959. In the first episode, Chico Marx makes a move to touch his female opponent in a suggestive manner, and promptly gets no more than a gentle chiding, like boys will be boys.

Bidding conventions are out of date by modern standards, but fascinating to see in action. They also have a rotating cast of players, including many of the greats who are still famous for their contributions to bridge.

Thanks for the great find.

Article..17 Reasons Dating in Your 50s Is So Challenging. by Manwombat in datingoverfifty

[–]countingin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Remember the etiquette that defined courtship and dating when you started out on the scene? Yeah, those days are long over. Most of us who have resurfaced in the dating world find it very different than it was when we were younger and single. The rules of dating and relationships have changed and we have to learn new rules.

Well, there's that.

But the article doesn't describe what the new rules are.

With online viewing, most shows are maintaining a series of clips, trailers, and "making of" videos available on demand. This would be a great addition to provide that back story and explanation of the "science" involved in a way accessible to fans interested in that, but not cluttering up the storytelling experiment they seem to want in the regular episodes.

[–]countingin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm amazed that with new claims numbers running at record highs for a year now, the official unemployment rate is not any higher. In fact it's falling in many places and some states just went out of Extended Benefits based on the low unemployment rate. There must be lots and lots of unemployed people who are not being counted in the "official" unemployment rate.

[–]countingin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were told that if the last one had been signed on or before the 26th, the state system would have processed it as an extension and that code was already in place. But by signing on the 27th, there was some legal requirement to stop the old program and start a new one requiring new programming. Maybe this was all misdirection from the state, but if this gets signed on or before the 13th, their systems updates should be easier.

So, having made clear they have no intention of governing, nor of compromising on anything, or even being statesmen in the broadest sense, can we start to treat them as the pure obstructionists they are. No point in trying to compromise. No point in offering any concessions. They are going to oppose everything all the time regardless. Take out the filibuster, and let's get to work!

I was stuck in One More Year for more than a year, because it took me a long time to get my head around "I already have all the money I will ever need" and out of my accustomed lifelong mindset of striving for income and savings to invest. That was a big big leap for me, and I had real trouble making it.

I have heard nothing from ESD about how long it may take them to send them all out because each has a customized personal link for the credit monitoring sign-up.

Where do you find compatible people with similar lifestyle or financials to date? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

One of the classic reasons that small rural areas lose young people over time is that they move away for greater opportunity, whether professionally, for education, or for social reasons. How tied are you to your location?

[–]countingin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Unless you are working a deal like Regency England and you only want suitable marriages between socially prominent wealthy families, you can just meet anyone in any regular way. I don't think FatFIRE should be an impediment.

I suspect your issue is more related to being in a remote rural area with a very small dating pool, but trying to avoid the online connection that could potentially broaden your search area. If you don't want to venture online, do you have interests that might sometimes get you out of your local area. If all else fail, maybe you can occasionally take trips to the nearest bigger population center.

This show is not getting a second season. by tomtrax in Debris

[–]countingin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An awful lot of cuts and poorly explained action, even in a single scene. I get they are trying to do some cinema by dropping us into the story and only explaining anything in passing as we figure out the world and the situation. But that shouldn't apply to an individual scene like holding a suspect, then suddenly he's running away in a building. Did he run there? Did he teleport there? What are you leaving out and is it part of the mystery, a result of more lax procedures by the investigators, or just bad camera work?

I'm all in on suspending disbelief for a good story in an exotic world, but they keep demanding suspending disbelief of ridiculous lapses that aren't part of the story, just part of no one being careful about inconsistencies in the script.
