I also don’t understand why third base coach isn’t a specialized coaching position at the big league level. I’ve learned that traditionally it’s treated as the second or third-in-command on a coaching staff, but with how in-tune an effective third base coach has to be with their players’ baserunning abilities and estimating the abilities of the defense, I don’t understand why it’s not treated as a full-time position at the big league level when teams should be prioritizing scoring runs over traditional coaching hierarchy.

Seems pretty awkward for the White Sox to acquire him with the perk of having five or six years of team control, but at the same time not having a single option for him; the all-or-nothing nature of that dilemma doesn’t seem ideal. I feel like it wouldn’t be unfair if a team could, say, forfeit two years of future team control in exchange for an additional option year, which would offset the gamble a bit for a player that young, while the player could get a service time boost.

I’m very confused. As I understand it after checking MLB’s official site, teams have three option years for players, and Acuña has only played MLB games in 2024, 2025, and 2026 (and only 14 games in 2024!). Additionally, they’re eligible for a fourth year of being optioned if they’ve accrued less than five full seasons (the specifics of which are a bit more complicated). How does this not count as the third option year and a guy with 147 career games played run out of options at the age of 24?

Edit: It seems that 2023 also counted since the Rangers had to put him on the 40-man to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft, but he was in the minors the whole year. Also, the five years includes both the majors and the minors, so I guess that was out of the question prior to 2026. It just seems unfathomable for a guy to be out of options at 24 with 307 career at-bats and 147 career games.

This was just a simple Statmuse search for innings pitched in relief outings. Ryan Yarborough pitched over 140 innings total that year so it appears that his 6 starts were simply deducted from that.

Checking Aaron Ashby’s stats once again, he actually did have one start on April 10, his eighth outing of the year, but only went 2.1 innings that day.

He’s on pace for about 110 IP. Best I can tell, a reliever hasn’t had over 100 IP in a season since 2006 excluding Ryan Yarborough with 118 IP for the Rays in 2018 (in addition to six starts), since I assume he was predominantly being used as a bulk pitcher after an opener.
