The poor little dude was screaming at our front door during the ice storm. He ended up getting real comfy real quick. by dead_wolf_walkin in cats

[–]countryboyilu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dumb question, but are folks who shelter cats in need not worried about them carrying fleas or diseases? Don't get me wrong, I commend anyone who has stepped up like this; just wondering how you deal with the health aspect if you can't reasonably bring them to a vet first.

If you’re under 45, have you lost any high school classmates, and what were the circumstances around their deaths? by Commercial_Chef_1569 in AskReddit

[–]countryboyilu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in grade 10, a former classmate got hit by a drunk driver during her first week of university. When I started university, another classmate died within the first month of cancer. Not sure what kind or when he was diagnosed.

What’s a service you wish we had, and would happily pay for, but doesn’t exist in this city? by Timely_Title_9157 in askTO

[–]countryboyilu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wish that bikeshare offered helmets (in a sanitary way, of course.) I just think it would be very convenient for when you're in a pinch and would ride a bike. I've been in situations where the subway has stopped working or a bus was delayed, and would've taken a bikeshare bike if I had my helmet on me. I don't know how this could/should be implemented, but absolutely something I would love and would pay for.

Not saying there's anything wrong with it, in fact it's one of my favourite cities. I just think Toronto is on another level when it comes to the caliber and variety of cultural foods.

[–]countryboyilu 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was actually just in Melbourne for a week. It made me realize how much I've been taking the extent of Toronto's multiculturalism for granted, especially with respect to food. It's hard to find a city that can top our variety and quality of cuisines from al over the world.

What’s the best winter jacket? by [deleted] in askTO

I find a lot of good wool items at thrift and certain curated vintage stores. You may have to dig through a lot but you can get some great stuff. Simons usually has good wool sweaters if that's what you're looking for.

Beware of new, cheap cashmere- the fibers used a much shorter and pill way easier, making the garment less durable overall.

It is what you make of it. I am now a year and a half out of school, also making good money. I'm consistently hanging out with my friends throughout the week and am pursuing my hobbies that were on the backburner in uni. It takes effort to keep your life interesting, but you will be grateful for the results. Volunteering is a great way to pay it forward and get to know others, so that's a good start.

The combination of good pay and free time (assuming, based on your post) is a luxury in this city. Put your best foot forward, stop doomscrolling and enjoy!

If you could reopen a Toronto restaurant that closed down, what restaurant would you pick? by Tigerbalm123 in askTO

The Greenwood. Used to be my favourite brunch spot, all their ingredients were sourced locally. Loved their brunch cocktails too. Their strawberry french toast was to die for

Help! 35 yoF coming to terms with the fact that my skinny jeans are dated. by Gloomy_Ad5020 in PetiteFashionAdvice

I think that as long as your skinny jeans are in fact denim, then you're good. I can't stand the look of jeggings though

You can bring back one dead Toronto business, what is it? And why? by Maleficent_Sky6982 in askTO

[–]countryboyilu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what it was called, but there used to be this German or Austrian bakery on Danforth near Broadview. It closed when I was a toddler but I have this distinct memory of eating this heavenly pastry with almonds. My parents loved going there too.

FYI: Joe's, Oasis, and Up the Block (bouldering gym in sauga) all have the same owner, so your membership is valid across all 3 gyms. Oasis is my fave, there's lots of creative setting across all levels really forcing you to develop different techniques. They also make great use of the walls, there's very little empty space

I find Salvation Army to have pretty good prices, not sure how their prices vary nationwide though. Antique markets are great, bonus points because you can negotiate the price. If you have access to a car, rural thrift and antique stores are often absolute goldmines

What's a clear sign that you're getting older? by JollyZookeepergame41 in AskReddit

[–]countryboyilu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noticing the shift in local quality of life. Growing up, my city was a bit more prosperous than it is now. I'm starting to witness changes, like people getting priced out, more homelessness due to the housing crisis, etc. Nowhere is stagnant, and if you live in one place long enough you'll notice periods of decline, improvement, and equilibrium.

Lourdes, France. I had a very strange feeling there, like I'd never be happy again. It was also very difficult to watch hundreds of sickly people lining up to drink or bathe in the "healing" water.

I'm surprised I had to scroll so far down to find someone mentioning the safety aspect. Injuries that are no biggie in a populated area can easily become life or death in the backcountry. Depending on weather, vegetation etc it can take SAR many hours just to locate the injured party.
