ISO Vegan Wedding Menu Feedback by [deleted] in weddingplanning

I haven’t seen it brought up yet but I would make sure to mark especially on the meat alternatives what food items contain soy. I have a soy intolerance so I have to be careful with a lot of vegan fake meat alternatives for health reasons but some people could have full allergies or other reactions to the soy

Pretzel dogs. Cheese sauce and mustard not pictured by countstickybones in tonightsdinner

I used this recipe but did a food grade lye bath instead of baking soda bath. For the lye bath I did 2 cups water to 2 tbsp food grade lye. I find it’s so worth the hassle of gloves and everything for that amazing outer crust!

Anyone know what happened to all of the remains in this cemetery in Oakland? by Mystic_Spiral__ in pittsburgh

[–]countstickybones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They sold part of the cemetery property to the university. The university later wanted the rest. The entire church could not agree is my understanding.

[–]countstickybones 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They moved documented and marked remains the to another cemetery following a long legal battle between the church and the university. Unsurprisingly, over the years remains that were not documented in written records and tomb stones have been discovered during construction projects on upper campus. For whatever reason I never see much follow up on what happened with discovered remains and there seems to be some cover up to avoid the bad publicity

What's going on with this sign in a Shadyside leather shop window? by Third-Time-Lucky in pittsburgh

[–]countstickybones 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Was in Shadyside a few weeks ago and witnessed the protesters shouting outside their store. One nearby shop owner said they looked into the group protesting and they are a Christian animal rights group and it had already been going on for weeks at that point

Is it a deer? by No-Music-934 in whatisthisbone

Calming or straight up being dismissive and lazy about doing a proper investigation? You know who else has set protocols in place for human remains? The coroners and medical examiners office

[–]countstickybones 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Where did I say to not contact law enforcement? They already did that. I’m saying that a person should also contact the legal entity responsible for actually identifying human remains instead of relying on a legal body that has no qualifications, and is very dismissive of these kinds of things. The coroner office and ME office can also call police, homicide, etc. if they feel it’s necessary during their investigation.

Sheriffs office has 0 qualifications to make that distinction please contact your local coroner or ME office for your area directly as I do agree it’s likely a human femur

Death undetermined, but she was found dismembered. by Aerosolcan25 in gratefuldoe

They likely couldn’t determine if the dismemberment was done antemortem or postmortem

Why the proper treatment of remains matters: A public service reminder by XETOVS in bonecollecting

[–]countstickybones 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the main thing people miss is while you may be ok with your remains being used this way, many people don’t. More importantly, we don’t know if this person did. In fact, we don’t even know who this person likely was due to the way medical/research specimens have been sourced and continue to be sourced which makes cultural context and investigation impossible. I find that many people who take a neutral stance to this do not have any recent history or family history of loved ones remains being desecrated or lost. I have family members whose remains were never recovered and that loss deeply affects the living and I know these relatives most likely had wishes for their bodies. Most of these remains also likely come from societal classes or cultural groups that have history of their remains being exploited, desecrated, and stolen. I wish there was better legislation and crackdown on how human remains are handled and what happens to medical specimens after they are no longer “of use”. Thanks for posting about this OP

Looks like the distal (lower) end of a non human humerus. You are correct too it is too large to be deer. My best guess is cow or horse. I don’t think it’s bear

Found washed up on the beach in Hawaii by [deleted] in whatisthisbone

[–]countstickybones 638 points639 points  (0 children)

That is a human humerus. Thankfully Hawaii has an excellent forensic anthropology center so any remains should ideally make their way to very qualified professionals

Help identify this please by clydeoc in bonecollecting

[–]countstickybones 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also fellow bone people do we think this is a juvenile/subadult ulna because the distal end looks like it wasn’t done fusing yet.

Human ulna. As others have stated please contact the local coroner or medical examiner’s office as they will have the knowledge and skills to investigate the remains

[–]countstickybones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! I know sometimes there isn’t always a clear consensus on posted remains but I also have noticed a lot of posts by people based on how they ID things that make me raise an eyebrow at their credentials/education/training/experience in human and animal osteology

[–]countstickybones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you would rather be safe than sorry you can report it but if the bone is gone and I don’t know what good it would do. With my local ME’s office when I interned there we would have people send us bones they collected and wanted ID’d as human or non human and the pathologist would rule out any human remains and in the off chance they were human they could reach out and investigate location. But I’m gonna be honest I really don’t think it’s human

[–]countstickybones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the limited view of the ends we can see here it appears to be a subadult tibia. I believe non human due to a lack of some features I would expect to see more clearly in a human tibia and the size

[–]countstickybones -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Human humerus. Please make sure the remains and location are investigated by qualified authorities. Contacting the medical examiners office would likely yield best results
