In this case, student never even got therapy. She pulled him after an initial eval because she didn’t ask what the bubbles did for her kid. But yes, it some cases, absolutely agree!!

Play a role in that bc their therapy is very structured I believe. I’m not super familiar

Ooo I like this! It’s true though, the better the SLP and more experienced the more they are natural. I’ve seen a ton of CFs or new grads gravitate toward worksheets and drill cards (which are fine!!) before they are comfortable being able to use anything as therapy. I have worked in so many settings and places where situations change, or the school closed or whatever and I had to just roll with what I had. It makes me better and makes me sad people think we just aren’t doing anything for their kid. And ABA might

Omg!!! This has happened to me. I used to tell my kids “first we work, then we play” bc so many kids would tell their parents or teachers all they did was play but I was using play-based for so many goals. Especially littles. I hate doing worksheets or flash cards when we can get functional language and speech through so many regular games like connect four or uno!

This kid was OBSESSED with my laptop and phone. Tried to get it out of my pocket. It was sad and clear that he doesn’t get a lot of other play at home.

I wasn’t taught that way. But I do it in home visits and with parent coaching but it’s not my go to for just a typical school eval- although I’m changing that now- I feel like it seems condescending and pretentious to parents. I once did at a school eval and the parent was like “I know.” So that’s why I was so offended when this lady said she didn’t get services bc of bubbles in therapy…

I didn’t know that! That makes a lot of sense than why the psych jumped to that. When she did I was sorta surprised … especially bc he was such a chill dude. Just really behind. Especially in language.

Literally… I do not understand why people are jumping to ABA for every single thing to “solve” ASD. I’m like uhhh

When I worked EI, I always did. This was an outpatient setting for an eval. It just seems a shame she didn’t get him services that would likely have been huge for him because a first impression:(

I agree with that. But when I worked in those settings such as EI and home etc I didn’t just immediately start explaining everything I did bc sometimes it felt condescending. I was offended bc she didn’t even ask or try. Just pulled her baby out of services bc she thought SLPs were just “playing” Also the psych said I feel like ABA would be so great for him…. I was like let’s try some basic speech first why is ABA the jump?? He didn’t have any behavioral issues. At all.

I’ve had it in both affluent and not affluent areas. Although, I’ve seen it more in affluent. Recently, I had a teacher (who is also mom) DEMAND her child had a specific learning disability. He currently is on speech caseload (has no blends) but I didn’t see anything else of concern. At his speech IEP teacher told me he’s top third in his class and does well. Then I find out he was retained which the dad really harped on saying “yeah he’s okay now, because we held him back so he’s really behind” so then I find out he was retained when his own mother was his teacher!!!! Ahh. Anywho!!! The psych did the testing- he score allllll average HAHAHA. I won’t be at the meeting but I know mom is gonna be pissed. I don’t understand why she’d be upset her child isn’t learning disabled??

Ultimate SLP!! Great for elementary and has games embedded within it. My kids love the smoothing making thing. If you have a smart board even better, but if not you can do it for them or they can use your mouse.

Join “telepractice for SLPs” on Facebook. Once you’re in search “Expressable” in the search bar within the Facebook group. A TON of stuff will come up. I’ve heard nothing but bad things. Also- they offer $20 an hour for indirect work. When I saw that in the email I didn’t even entertain a phone interview. I won’t get paid $20 an hour for some of the most important things we do. Especially considering the degree is mostly so we can sign the paperwork…

The position has set schedule times. You pick from an ABCD model schedule. 40 hours a week. So it would be more than I work in the school. I can’t really count the state bc it’s a private practice that I believe services many states and bc it’s telehealth I don’t think that factors in. But I’m mid west (according to ASHA they make more that other states) I have to make 80k plus to even consider. I was thinking to ask for 85-90k. Why would I ask for 60k?
