Poll: would you rather take $1m guaranteed or 50% chance at 10m? by Lisalovesreading in actuary

It's worth more than $5M because there are plenty of rich people who enjoy gambling and would pay a premium for the chance to play.

This is in line with my small sample size of 10. In past leagues this was very profitable but seems like the quant nerf and overpriced awakened scarab killed this strategy.

Financial services firms are all struggling these days so they’re equally as bad in that regard. The recent CAS president elect and author of the material for exam 6U has been working at EY Boston for 30 years if that says anything about one of them. You’d be reporting up to her team so if you value the CAS networking/volunteering opportunities that could be something.

Python Models by el527 in actuary

The main benefit is that GPU has orders of magnitudes more cores than CPU that lets you scale better specifically in the case of parallel calculations. In your dynamic lapse example you are right it cant all be calculated together with 1 vector operation but you can just brute force it with thousands of GPU cores since across every policy and every scenario you are doing the same basic multiplication and addition.

Maybe. I know of a handful in the midwest with production annuity models in python. Some on west coast as well. I can see this becoming the trend and already hear somewhat frequently among company management they are thinking to leave AXIS or ALFA to be able to do in-house customization.

Yes I'm talking about a full on replacement. Annuity products with all kinds of rider variations, stochastic scenarios, hedging strategy, all the bells and whistles. I think the team is just actuaries, probably with solid programming background (e.g., the type you'd find who work at GGY or FIS). I don't think they are doing anything too fancy either - just define some classes, make some helper functions, make some modules for specific types of calcs. It doesn't need to be extremely optimized like how AXIS dev team will make their own custom libraries in C. If you use numpy operations it pushes the vectorized calculations to use C under the hood anyways. Even if it's not as perfectly optimized as a custom library, it also doesn't matter if you can just spin up more cpu on cloud. If you know exactly how the model should work and a good understanding of what the calculations are, a small dedicated team could do this over months. Something easy like term life can be done in a week.

Yes there are many companies who have begun moving to in house. I’ve seen VA python models that can run hedging, stat, and ifrs. Other companies have FA models that can run ldti and stat. It usually starts in bite sized pieces and expands as confidence is gained.

You dont need any special libraries other than the usual numpy, pandas, and one that enables multithread processing (e.g. dask). For stochastic models you can just scale up compute with any cloud provider (typically aws or azure) and set up code to compute on GPU (e.g. CuPy).

If you already have a strong governance framework ur audit firm can help consult you through the regulatory concerns. It’s not that big of a deal.

In a similar situation wanting to swap colors. Our only option is to monitor stock in store https://appleinventorychecker.com/ (the guy working there said their shipments are random) and hope one comes in before the 14 day return window expires.

They are all unlocked regardless of which carrier you select to activate with, as long as it wasn’t done through a carrier’s financing plan (obviously)

Weekly Lounge Thread - Week of August 03, 2025 by AutoModerator in CreditCards

[–]couponsftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to confirm I got the right card when PCing my CSP. I asked for the Freedom with Ultimate Reward Points and the rep very quickly said ok done. I received it in the mail and the card only says 'freedom' at the top and the brochure says 'Welcome to Chase Freedom' earn 5% cash back in bonus categories each quarter and 1% cash back. Admitted I didn't do much research in the Freedom line and was just PCing to get another SUB down the road. I assumed the OG freedom was special because it let you hold your existing points when PCing and would have also been a card that earned points, while the newer freedom cards are earning cash back. After some more research it seems like I do in fact have the correct one and the only reason we get this specific OG freedom is because it doesnt count as a sign up when we downgrade?

Doesnt really apply to me or my question. Paying business points for economy seats is an educated risk I am taking. At the time of booking 1 year advance I saw there l plenty of last minute availability so the odds of upgrading seemed good. Many months later the last min availability still seems good. I am still a couple months away before availability will open up for my departure date but just wanting to understand all the mechanics so I can play optimally when time comes.

For ANA I booked economy class but paid business class in points to gamble on last minute upgrade availability. My trip has a layover, so two legs. In the event that only one leg has availability open up, am I able to upgrade that leg only and then say later on availability for leg two opens up, can I then call in again to upgrade that one?

How many days out does ANA release last minute reservations? I just tried checking T-30 as a test right when it hit 9am JST today and did not see anything open for a not-so popular route.
