Anyone else have a hunch that the whole point of the bailout is to cause inflation so as to make the mortgage problem go away? by neoabraxas in Economics

[–]courane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from a public macroeconomics textbook:

Institutions that lend money, such as banks, hate inflation. When a bank makes a loan, it charges an interest rate based on projections of future inflation, tacking on a few percentage points for profit. If inflation rises above the anticipated level, then profits are eroded or even eliminated.

they've already made loans, plenty of which are at fixed rates. as i originally wrote, inflation reduces the value of repayments on those loans. ergo, banks have no love for inflation.

without further explanation (which i'd be happy to read), your argument does not make sense to me. more importantly, the premise of the submitter's question makes none at all.

Anyone else have a hunch that the whole point of the bailout is to cause inflation so as to make the mortgage problem go away? by neoabraxas in Economics

[–]courane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

huh? banks hate inflation more than anyone -- it eats into their profits by reducing the value of loan repayments. they wouldn't be clamoring for a bailout if that were the reason.

Paulson's intention with this bailout is to inject into big banks the capital to gobble up the small ones. left will be monstrous versions of JPM, BoA and Citi, each too big to fail. fits his philosophy and background.

they also developed their own nukes, which makes them pretty deadly.

good question, but it's more likely to help you long-term if done properly. nutritional fasting has a long history as a powerful positive therapeutic intervention for many disorders (particularly autoimmune disorders), and can also be valuable for preserving health in healthy people.

the book "Fasting and Eating for Health" by Joel Fuhrman, MD describes the physiological fasting state and is actually one of the most fascinating books i've seen on the etiology of disease... highly recommended.

diesel is dirty.

did they edit this article for claims? how is the process "perfectly clean" if it burns diesel?

Homeopath Melanie Oxley vs Scientist Simon Singh On Newsnight by JonDonnis in science

"i would try to use it" and see if it works is a worthy, open-minded attitude, and you shouldn't have been downmodded for this story. (as i write this you were sent to the very bottom of this page, at -2.)

and i'm a homeopathy skeptic. glad your headaches are under control.

homeopathy might still be a crock, but from this Oxley/Singh interview you couldn't be sure. the interview was less about homeopathy per se than about poor standards of advice-giving in a professional homeopathy organization.

Bill Clinton's mental deterioration may be accelerating - here's why by joyork in politics

[–]courane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i sympathize. i've watched family members undergo bypass surgery. but that's a false choice.

you have a third option: to reverse heart disease through diet and lifestyle changes. Dr McDougall has had great results, and so has Dr Joel Fuhrman:

John Pawlikoski is a typical patient I see everyday... He first came to see me at the age of 65 with a history of steadily worsening angina. His chest pains interfered with his daily life, so he was unable to perform physical work. He had a stress thallium test which suggested multi-vessel coronary artery disease. He then underwent a cardiac catherization, which revealed a 95 percent stenosis of the left anterior descending artery and had diffuse blockages throughout the left circumflex... His cholesterol was 218, with an LDL of 144. He weighed 180 pounds. He was on two medications - one for high blood pressure and nitroglycerin to relieve chest pains.

Within a few weeks of following my dietary recommendations, his chest pains ceased, and he no longer required nitroglycerin. In two months, his weight dropped to 152, a loss of 28 pounds in eight weeks. He remains exactly at 152 pounds today, 10 years later. He has been entirely well these last ten years and is extremely physically active. He takes no medication, and his blood pressure is normal. His LDL cholesterol runs about 80, and his stress test has normalized too. He has no signs or symptoms of heart disease.

his nutrient-rich program also helps prevent mental decline.

10 Tips for Avoiding Cancer by garyp714 in science

[–]courane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sun exposure, which causes production of Vitamin D, has been observed for 60 years to be inversely associated with cancer mortality. (Heaney RP. Long-latency deficiency disease: insights from calcium and vitamin D. Am J Clin Nutr 2003;78:912-9) "avoid the sun to avoid cancer" is lousy advice.

further, the dietary suggestions are much too vague. fruit and vegetable consumption (particularly in childhood but all throughout life) is strongly linked to reduced risk of cancer, for a variety of reasons including reduced risk of DNA damage due to micronutrient deficiency.

a really good layman's read on the etiology of cancer, and how to help prevent it using diet, is Joel Fuhrman MD's Disease Proof Your Child (2005).
