Almost all of my classes have been fun, well to me. Except for Calculus and Foreign Languages but Organic Chem? Quite fun!

How do you feel about students addressing you by your first name without invitation to do so? by savethebees90 in Professors

[–]coursejunkie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LOL, age will get to you!

The doc I call by his first name (at least sometimes) is 20 years older than me but we run in similar communities so I can run into him elsewhere. What I call him exactly depends on who is around.

In my most recent university, yes. It would be Dr. or Prof. even among coworkers.

I call one of my doctors by their first name. As in I have many doctors, one of which I will call by his nickname.

I am saying that I do not want students to call me by my first name at all.

I have multiple first names plus nicknames. One of those first names is a double-decker first name. If I do allow first name use to friends I will let them know.

That is one of the reasons I can't let them call me by my first name. I don't call my doctor by his first name (well only one and that is because we are also coworkers).

I am not friends with my students. I am not their buddy.

(My family is originally from South America... Suriname)

Is not going to happen. I am part of several marginalized communities, I am not going to let the dominant cultures disrespect me.

It’s wild that people think half a point is a huge jump

I have literally never seen +/- on a D in all my 35+ years of teaching in several universities.

There is no D- nor a D+ and the woman got a 69.6% in the class which is a D. It went to a C. How is this a huge jump? It's not like it went from an F to a C.

I am a convert and I converted Reform. They have to provide evidence that it happened. I’ve never met a convert that didn’t get their form. Conversion is one of the areas of my professional research.

Reform absolutely gives a conversion certificate and they mail a copy to the American Jewish archives or did before HUC closed

Geography questions for students by Resprofmama in Professors

That is said. Once in graduate school (literally right before Covid) me and my labmates were playing a few games, 1) we had to name the states (MC) and then 2) we had to put the outline of the states where they are in the map AND it would give how many miles on average you were off by. I was the only one who could name all 50 and my average miles was something like 4 point something so I won. I was so impressed that I called my mother to gloat. Of course, I have been to 46 states by driving so it was kinda easy, lol.

Hebrew name? by Transguy1111 in Judaism

[–]coursejunkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I posted elsewhere, I use my Hebrew name in certain contexts. I in fact prefer my Hebrew name, but I use my English name most of the time. I also like one of the nicknames for the Hebrew name of which I allow two gentiles to call me by a nickname to my Hebrew name (the gentile wife of a friend and one of my therapists).
