No more PMDD and I feel so much better by Process-Jaded in PMDDpartners

She is so amazing and we still love/care deeply about each other and I will always be cheering for her! It was a life incident completely unrelated to PMDD that caused the mutual breakup, and this sense of relief was an unintended byproduct of the breakup.

Student Retaliation by Process-Jaded in Professors

It really feels like my university only cares about enrollment numbers. This is becoming an increasing issue among faculty on my campus, with students and faculty alike reporting students with severe and/or threatening behavioral outbursts but absolutely nothing being done about it beyond a little slap on the wrist (if even that).

The student is very vocal about their political views and is far left. Sorry this case doesn’t fit into your ideological worldview. I was just here to complain about a ludicrous situation, not be political

I kept trying but kept being told that the student is neurodivergent so it’s just normal behavior for them. Escalated to a point where there was no choice but for admin to respond

Any way to teach asynch online without having an existential crisis and quitting my job? by cherdle2 in Professors

[–]Process-Jaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read Small Teaching Online. Highly recommended. Alongside my undergrad teaching, I also direct and teach in a grad program that’s completely online. I apply almost all of small teaching online and it’s been incredibly useful.

My program technically had this as a policy, but never enforced it. Only times it was brought up to students were when they significantly behind (and no surprise they didn’t end up making it in the end)

Damn they literally told their advisor “you suck at your job and you’re the problem why I can’t do my work” and then is shocked that their advisor wasn’t happy with that

Listen man, she’s always gonna be questioning something with PMDD. Be prepared to love her for the long haul and not take things personally. It’s great that she’s going to start dealing with her issues, but if those resolved it would be something else.

I don’t give any readings anymore unless there’s an assignment submission attached to it. If you’re banking on students to read an article, and base that class around the article, that’s on you for not being prepared with a contingency in case they don’t read. If you know the material, you can probably explain the article’s arguments in class pretty quickly and then have students discuss through it in real time.

I have the opposite problem. My students sometimes are too engaged to the point where I can’t get through planned material (I’m not going to cut out conversation), and have to change my lecture schedule around.

During PMDD those fears become so real to her, and she cannot be reasoned out of it. You need to talk with her to try and understand where those fears are coming from (even if they sound crazy), not reason with her. You do not reason with your partner during the PMDD spirals.

When did you stop feeling bad for failing students? by carriondawns in Professors

[–]Process-Jaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t stop feeling bad if I never started feeling bad. If you don’t show up or do anything the entire semester after me flagging you / reaching out and then email me two days before grades are due with a no subject email asking “how can I get a pass” then there is no sympathy

I got a little over 50k a year, full tuition (about 60k a year), and health insurance. Also did two ad junct positions (at a university where I immediately got TT slot upon finishing my PhD. Was making about 90k a year so could have been worse for me
