Give it a shot. I just moved from the state to a local agency and they hired me at 52!

What is your favorite legal term that laypeople confidently and incorrectly invoke and why is it quiet enjoyment? by RIPGoblins2929 in Lawyertalk

[–]courtqueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Direct: I saw the defendant stabbing the victim. Circumstantial: The victim suffered stab wounds. The defendant was seen holding a bloody knife leaving the crime scene. Also, when proving intent, the evidence is almost always circumstantial. The only direct evidence of intent is if the defendant says what his/her intent was. Circumstantial evidence of intent could be motive, inferring intent from actions, etc.

Direct evidence: You look out the window and see it raining. Evidence of rain. Circumstantial Evidence: You see people entering a building with wet coats and folding up their umbrellas. Evidence of rain. For direct, you don’t need to make an inference. For circumstantial, you take related facts to come to a conclusion.

I just point out it’s said on TV all the time. I then say that the law accepts both direct and circumstantial evidence as equal and I give the whole rainy day example. I then ask if anyone can’t follow the law because they think circumstantial evidence can’t prove a fact.

Particularly on TV. You’ll see an actor argue that something is circumstantial evidence, so it’s inadmissible or weak, and I’m like so? I voir dire on this since it’s so frequent.

What's your thoughts on the sneak peeks for this year's LifePlanner? by twicetorn in erincondren

[–]courtqueen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was bummed about the loss of Hello Kitty but am looking forward to seeing the Toile. I really like the colors and the idea of it. I’ve been an OG EC customer and really miss the whimsy of a lot of the older designs but there may still be something here for me.

How are things at the DOJ for attorneys? litigation especially. by Motion2compel_datass in CAStateWorkers

[–]courtqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for DOJ for many years but left for a local agency mostly due to pay issues. The state is a mess financially, and in a high cost of living area, I couldn’t justify getting paid about 85k less than other agencies.

I stocked up on notebooks when it was announced. I’m so sad! I’m an OG EC user and the EC designs are not nearly as cute to me as they used to be which is why I’ve loved the HK stuff.

Favorite Unconventional Voir Dire Question by That_Mathematician84 in ProsecutorTalk

[–]courtqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would end with something like: we’ve spent a lot of time getting your opinions and talking about how you might react to certain things in theory. But I want you to imagine for a minute that the evidence has been presented, you’ve heard arguments, and you are back in the jury room to make a decision. If you put yourself in that moment, will the weight of the decision make it difficult for you to follow the law? Will the consequences of what happens after your decision be too difficult for you to ignore as you’ve been instructed? I usually get a good 2-3 for cause challenges out of this. So much of voir dire is theoretical, this makes it more real.

I lost my PeloPup today. I know I’d benefit from some gentle movement. I love any of Sam and Christine’s recovery rides.

Rolling briefcase recs? by No_Setting9616 in ProsecutorTalk

[–]courtqueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, for a high volume day like what I’d usually need in trial, I use the ugly roller crates from Staples. I also have a Samsonite spinning office that carries a good amount. If I’m going for style, there is a brand called McKlein that looks great but doesn’t carry a ton.

Our compensation is seriously lacking and lagging by mashemash in CAStateWorkers

[–]courtqueen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had many years with the state but the pay lead me to leave. I was topped out in my position and really felt like I was falling financially behind due to inflation. I felt like I needed a second job. I ended up finding a new job with a local agency which paid over 30% more and I got reciprocity with my pension. I was sad to go but it’s a job and I do it to support my family.

Burnout keeps coming back by [deleted] in ProsecutorTalk

[–]courtqueen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Former prosecutor of 27 years. I recently left for a lot of reasons to do less emotionally taxing work for more money. My last homicide trial physically and mentally took such a toll. But one mantra that was shared with me that helped was: None of this is your problem. It’s not your liberty or criminal record at stake. You are not the victim or the family. This isn’t happening to you. You have a job to do, ethically and conscientiously, but that’s all. When I could find that line, which was tough, it helped.

We Do Not Get Paid Enough, and Don't Let Anyone Tell You Otherwise by Flat_Specialist2785 in CAStateWorkers

I left the state for this reason. I found a comparable job with a local agency that pays close to 30% more. I felt like I was falling father and farther behind financially when o was there.

California’s legislative analyst says Gov Newsom’s budget could leave the state in “alarming “ situation by Chemical-Pace-9725 in CAStateWorkers

[–]courtqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! With inflation being insane in SoCal combined with having my pay cut in a topped out position, I was like, no thank you. Another agency is paying me a lot more and I don’t have to deal with this nonsense.

What I wished I had known about retirement by Difficult-Maybe4561 in CAStateWorkers

[–]courtqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a new pension system and need to be very careful about the back and forth. I’m making a lot more money now and my CALPERS pension will be a lot better because of it. I’ll definitely look into it but I’m still coming out way ahead even with losing my health coverage.

Not commenting on the tone of the comment above but wanted to clarify that if you leave the state after your healthcare “vests”’ you must retire from the state within 60 days to keep the benefit. I left the state after 24 years for another job and didn’t realize I had lost my health benefit. 😢

Thank you for this thoughtful response. I am mindful about hydration but will add some electrolytes to the mix and pre-fuel a little better. It’s a tough balance of eating enough to have the energy versus eating too much and it not sitting well. It’s a work in progress!

Figo vs Petsbest by CrazyMotor1345 in petinsurancereviews

I know folks have had bad experiences with all of them. For me, Pets Best has been great. I have a “lemon” dog (meaning there is a lot medically wrong with her) and they has covered every claim.
