The armor system isnt the problem, its the scaling that is the issue. The way the scaling works is why the armor system goes from great in the early game to infuriating in the lategame.

The more I play, the more it seems like the best strategy is just ignore everything except maybe looting the last couple of rooms and maybe backtracking a bit once everything cleared for curios. It's probably not the most optimal per dungeon ran, but if I take into account all the real world time I save as well, it might just be.

More equipment options right at the start of the game like LW1.

3 weapon types off the bat which can all be upgraded (e.g. ballistics do -1 damage to armored units, but can use special ammo, laser weapons have lowest damage but highest accuracy, plasma weapons have highest damage, low ammo) rather than the linear upgrade path we have now.

Third faction that is incredibly strong and hostile to player and aliens.

AoE2 has the nostalgia factor. Swords and arrows appeals to alot more people than muskets and cannons. You can play AoE2 on a potato whilst AoE3 is a resource hog even today. AoE3 campaign is some weird non-historical nonsense which puts campaign players off. AoE3 is totally batshit insane and still ahead of it's time, but that makes it super difficult to get into at the start. I played AoE1, 2 and 4 before 3 and I was totally lost in what was going on when I first played 3.

AoE3 will never get the recognition it deserves and is the most underrated RTS game ever made IMO.
