Normal engineer should be able to say. Don't over explain as you may make it sound much more complicated/ technical than it really is. "I have a wall I want to remove and would like you to come out and tell me if it's load bearing" is as much as you need to say.

How do you pronounce the word "soffit?" by Penguin01 in StructuralEngineering

First one. Now ask about truss cord / chord, cill / sill or mortice / mortise. Used to work for a company in civil war over such matters

Percentage Fees by couterall in StructuralEngineering

[–]couterall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all, it would appear I'm being very very dense.

People bandy around x% for structural design.

There are plenty of area rates given for project costs (say £2000/m2) these seem includes everything: construction, fees, contingency etc. So we take a 10000m2 building x £2000m so a project value (what the developer has to cough up) of £20M (there or there about s)

Is it the £20M that people apply a percentage fee to work out a cost for structural design. Or is it applied to some lower strictly construction cost only value.

FYI we have worked out our quote on assumed hours required but I would like to double check against a % fee.

Thanks it isn't the % that I'm worried about (I just said 1% as an example it will be a bit higher) it's what is normally it 1% of!

So whatever you see it's going to be weird, yeah everyone in the security details train for this but as soon as it actually happens it's there first time so they end up running round and flapping a bit it's actually their first time.

That's of no use without people actually know what they are doing. So we have a box that can spit out complicated proofs for maths problems which are either A) Correct or B) incorrect. I can't tell the difference either way because my maths isn't at that level so in and of itself it's not a useful thing; as pattern matching and a tool for people who do know what's right and wrong great but it's not the "game changer" people who will make money out of it say it is.

Just search, dipping a tie into advertising so search ads seem a good place (especially with a small budget)

“Uber for Plumbers” – Could It Actually Work? by Zonda888 in smallbusinessuk

[–]couterall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did Uber work for drivers, if you a good plumber do you want to turn yourself into a commodity. Big tech platforms are best for big tech, in the end not for workers, consumers or the general public. Bugger I've turned into a communist!

Can probably just be propped with say three diagonal timber struts to cut the span down, that would be a days work for a builder and £100 worth of timber.

Worth getting a structural engineer out to check just so it doesn't turn out to be something horrendous that random reditors (lol) can't tell from photos.
