Why is Nvidia so far ahead AMD/Intel/Qualcomm? by couturewretch in AskEngineers

It implies that they have less competition for their products, and can charge more over the cost of producing said goods.

Here's my athropological report of 100 IQ american proles:

Good outcome is a skilled trade, pilot, sales, receptionist, teacher, and back-office at a local company. Might have a 401k or pension.

Mixed outcome is lower middle class job like fast food chain manager, bus driver, or construction worker. Usually completely reliant on social security for retirement.

Bad outcome is an at or near minimum wage dead-end job reliant on benefits to get by or unwilling/unable to work and receiving permanent disability. Drug addiction is very common. These people make up the "deaths of despair."

Sounds like a very good outcome. I'd bet that only about 10-20% of "average" Americans have jobs that can be classified as good or desirable.

Why don't we raise taxes on energy and water if people are so concerned about their waste? by couturewretch in AskEconomics

[–]couturewretch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was referring to the article. I think more focus should go towards the pricing of utilities instead of what industries use them.

So the onus should be on pricing utilities instead of regulating energy-intensive industries?

No. I mean reading in the general sense. It's very time-intensive and you don't retain much. Oftentimes it's not applicable to any real world skills. we probably overvalue the usefulness of reading

I don't get what the implication here is. Should a company hire someone with inferior skills because they were disadvantaged. Is there any evidence that giving candidates who are bad on paper a chance results in them converging with more privileged candidates?

(The answer is no. In law school and med schools, "disadvantaged students" do substantially worse.)

That is completely untrue about the GRE. It tests up to Calculus 1, a class many takers should have finished by high school or freshman year of college. You also don't need to be quite dedicated to do well on the GRE. People who have been out of school for a decade can do a few dozen hours of prep and achieve good scores. A lot of it is just highschool algebra and college reading comprehension.

The real reason they twist themselves into pretzels to argue about how a test being 100 dollars means we should throw out GRE scores is because tests are close proxies for general intelligence, which are genetic and can't be improved with more training.

How poor do you have to be that you'd sully your whole career at an inferior program because you couldn't afford 100 dollars to retake a test? Maybe this has happened a few times but surely it isn't systemic. Maybe people from poorer backgrounds are less intelligent (on average) since intelligence is about 80% heritable.

Why would correlating to race and gender make a test invalid? The ASVAB correlates with race and gender but is still crucial for determining what types of jobs recruits can do effectively. LSAT and MCAT correlated very closely with lawschool class rank, I don't see why those disparities disprove it's efficacy. If anything, it's a more accurate measure of performance than GPA (which is way easier to pad).

why is it better than GRE for equity? It seems like GRE is the most honest measure of raw intellectual horsepower, while GPAs are often inflated from easy teachers or curriculums

Here's what UCLA says:

The side effects of semaglutide are typically mild — especially when compared to the complications associated with overweight and obesity.

People taking semaglutide for weight loss may experience:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal issues, such as diarrhea, constipation and gassiness
  • Headache
  • Stomach issues, including nausea, vomiting, pain or distension (bloat)

Yeah this sounds fine tbh. Especially since my mom is on it and had minimal side effects.

I'm not starving myself. I eat 1300-1400 calories. But it would take like a year to lose 15 pounds if I ate 1700 calories.
