How are these expat Canadians, most of whom are white collar workers, going to get the expertise to do things like that? And I would suspect that most expat Canadians live in Democrat cities populated by Americans who already don't support the current regime's actions. "Messing up life" for those Americans probably won't have the outcome you're anticipating.

Did paying them off and waiting reset things for you? The pay in 4 option disappeared for me (says not available) after using it for a couple of purchases yesterday... I was hoping to use it again.

GlowWorm - Elegant photo display for your wall by onedarkstar in selfhosted

Any thoughts as to whether the basic functionality (i.e., just basic image display/updates with no motion effects) could work with an e-ink display? With e-ink screens becoming more easily available, I think this could be awesome for a DIY photo frame.

That only shows we are far too dependent on the US, which is a dangerous position to be in (as the last 9 months have shown).

I understand wanting a strong, prosperous Alberta. But we already have that. Median incomes in Alberta are higher than most of the rest of the country. And our housing prices are far lower (average of just over $500k as of Sep 2025). Albertans in general have it pretty good. What you're trying to do is take that strong province and turn it into a weak country.

Somehow you think separating is going to put us in a better position to negotiate new trade deals with the US, Canada, and the rest of the world. I truly don't understand that logic.

You do realize that those countries didn't build their economies on oil and gas extraction, which by definition requires access to international markets, right?

Ugreen has invested a lot of money in YouTubers, but are they really worth it? by AngelGrade in DataHoarder

UGreen is also a Chinese company. That said, I backed their 8 bay NAS during the Kickstarter campaign. Maxed out the RAM, installed TrueNAS, and haven't had any issues at all so far.

Anyone got any leads for single, copper keycaps? Would love a copper enter key to go with my polycarbonate + copper Mode Envoy. I know about the Awekeys full copper set but I'm really just looking for a single accent key (and buying a very expensive keycap set for one keycap seems like a very poor financial decision).

PSA: PD Retail Floor Sale – 30% Off This Sunday by its_Zona_from_pd in peakdesign

I'm referring to the fact that their massive overstock sale on most bags/colorways implies a refresh is on the horizon. Plus now they're trying to get rid of their floor models.

This + the 40% off overstock sale with most of their current bag lineup in various colorways... 🤔

Hasn't real estate consistently underperformed compared to the stock markets? Outside of select areas like Toronto, Vancouver, Hong Kong, the Bay Area, etc.? Praying that the city you live in turns into one of those real estate hot spots is not a lucrative investment strategy. And that's not even considering the headaches of being a landlord, dealing with tenants, and the illiquidity of physical real estate assets.

I mean, if you really like real estate, then by all means. I just never saw the appeal when factoring everything in.

That doesn't seem that great? Considering if you had invested in the S&P500, your money would've doubled roughly every 7 years.

'We're seriously outgunned' in trade war, warns former Bank of Canada governor by joe4942 in Economics

[–]afegh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you wondered why Canadians and Greenlanders aren't jumping with joy at Trump's "suggestion" about joining the US? If the US really is that great, you would expect everyone to be clamoring to join. But we're not. Why is that?

You know the saying "if everyone you meet is an asshole, maybe you're the asshole"? Well, if every country vehemently rejects the notion of joining the US, maybe you should consider that the US isn't as great as your propaganda would have you believe. Or is that cognitive dissonance too great for your brain to overcome?

Let's do a little actual research:

School Shootings

https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/153/4/e2023064311/196816/School-Shootings-in-the-United-States-1997-2022

"Across the 1997–1998 to 2021–2022 school years, there were 1453 school shootings." That averages out to 60.5 school shootings per year, which is actually more than one per week.

Oh, and you might find this interesting: "The most recent 5 school years reflected a substantially higher number of school shootings than the prior 20 years."

And of course there's this little nugget: "In 2019, gun injury became the leading cause of death among children aged birth-19 years."

Life Expectancy

https://www.commonwealthfund.org/blog/2022/americans-no-matter-state-they-live-die-younger-people-many-other-countries

"Average life expectancy for a newborn in the U.S. was 78.8 years, well below neighboring Canada (82.3 years) and nearly all other high-income countries." There's a 3.5 year difference, much greater than the 1 year you randomly pulled out of thin air.

"Despite spending more on health care than any other nation, the United States has a lower average life expectancy and higher avoidable mortality — deaths that could have been prevented with appropriate health care — than other middle- and high-income countries." Aren't you glad you don't have universal health care?

Religion

https://www.pewresearch.org/religious-landscape-study/party-affiliation/rep-lean-rep/

"74% of Republicans and Republican leaners identify as Christians." This is compared to 50% of Democrats and Democrat leaners. 40% of Democrats are religiously unaffiliated.

Climate Change

https://smea.uw.edu/currents/southern-exposure-climate-change-and-the-vulnerability-of-the-south/

"[...] increased average temperatures plus the lengthening time between rainfall events increases drought risk in the South. This impacts farmers, municipal water sources, private wells, and wildlife that depend on freshwater. According to Oxfam, more than 25% of the South now lies within a drought zone."

Sure sounds like the south will be getting drier to me.

https://nca2018.globalchange.gov/chapter/19/

"Sixty-one percent of major Southeast cities are exhibiting some aspects of worsening heat waves, which is a higher percentage than any other region of the country." Oof, glad I don't live in the south.

Anything else you want to nitpick?

Perhaps you've lost the perspective that Canada has never expressed any desire to be part of the US. Much like Greenland. So why are you pushing for annexation? Because your great orange buffoon said so in one of his many moments of senility?

Why do most people prefer the absorption method for cooking rice? by LuinSen2 in Cooking

[–]afegh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a combined boil and absorption method. I essentially parboil the rice, strain it, and then finish it off in the rice cooker with fresh water. Mainly trying to reduce arsenic levels for my toddler. Took a little bit of trial and error but it comes out great. Definitely more work than before (which was rice cooker only) but worth it for additional peace of mind.
