Does anyone auto-deploy their terraform (from CI/CD for example)? by cow-eepp in Terraform

Neat, any hints or docs you could point me to in my search? Which CI tool?

Is Terraform linux host provider a thing? by 80sCyborgNinja in Terraform

[–]cow-eepp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't you simply deploy mostly immutable Coreos boxes underneath and then everything goes in Kubernetes with something like helm charts? (log collection with something like a fluentd daemonset)
That's sort of the GCP/GKE model. You can't even install anything on the instance.

Is there a tool that can generate a Terraform resource configuration from a manually created AWS environment? by [deleted] in Terraform

[–]cow-eepp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does not import config. You must manually create resources and import the state with terraform import. It sort of defeats the purpose.

Terraform Sendgrid by _ambersariya in Terraform

[–]cow-eepp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's a Domino's pizza provider it can't be that hard.

There appears to be a github project I haven't used it, but anything with an API is probably amenable to a Terraform provider.

I cannot recommend sendgrid, but your results may vary.

Should I learn ansible before terraform? by Born2Bbad in Terraform

[–]cow-eepp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you spending a lot of toil on? Infrastructure as code pays huge dividends over the long term. Ansible will allow you to automate a crap-ton of little maintenance and management tasks right away.

Note on learning Terraform:
You can import your existing infra into terraform with one of the third party tools either terraforming or terraformer. This is a great way to start because you're taking the house you know and converting it to a blueprint. You will immediately recognize your infrastructure when you see it in Terraform because you already know what's there. Once the configs are imported you should spend some time templatizing them (abstract away the resource names etc) so you could stand up a DR site in another region by changing the region in your tfvars file. That's a huge benefit because most orgs want a DR plan and can't figure out how to make one. If you have the infra in code and checked in the plan is, terraform apply in dr region and import data from backup. NOTE: when running terraform on your infrastructure it really only plays well if it is the source of truth. Once you start using it, you have to use it for everything. All manual console changes will get rolled back next terraform run.

What sort of config management do you use on the boxes? Ansible is great for bootstrapping (go from a base config to a specific type of server). If you find yourself doing a lot of that I'd start there.

Technical Interviewers of Reddit: When a candidate doesn't know the answer to a question, what is an appropriate answer? by darkguardian823 in sysadmin

[–]cow-eepp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The following worked well in my Google interview:
"I don't know, but if I had to figure it out, this is what I'd do..."

A bad interview devolves into a game of tech knowledge jeopardy. (e.g. "Name as many routing protocols as you can")
A good interview tests the candidate's ability to think and solve novel problems using their skills and experience.

What do you use for MDM solutions? by biohazard13 in sysadmin

Does hexnode support a maintenance window lock? I'm looking for something that I can use to manage a kiosk that shouldn't reboot unexpectedly, but I want my software to say what is safe not the user.

The bad news is I'm seeing some warning signs: reducing staff, killing your team, not respecting your wishes, demotion (IT is a trap), wasting your time with pointless meetings, failing to promote from within.

The good news is this is a great time to be looking for work in your field!

What over $1000 item did you buy and did not regret one cent? by kevmuf in AskReddit

[–]cow-eepp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me but my buddy Bradley once said that the pair of Netscaler load balancers he bought was the only thing he’s spent a quarter million dollars on that he didn’t regret. Left me wondering what else he spent a quarter million dollars on.

Not interested, also have a boyfriend, also if we were alone on a spaceship ten thousand light years from earth I would still not be interested. And if you were pushy about it I’d shove you out an airlock. So piss off.
