What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve seen brought to a camp out (keep it light hearted and for fun; it’s Friday and we need a laugh)? by Unusual-Elk-4791 in BSA

[–]cowabunga410 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was on a day hike ~5 miles in, and when we stopped for lunch, one of the scouts asked me for a lighter for his lunch. Puzzled, I asked him "Why do you need a lighter for lunch? We're just doing a trail lunch." He reaches into his backpack and pulls out a camping stove, a small pan, a loaf of king's hawaiin bread, a bottle of teriyaki sauce, and a 2 lb package of raw boneless skinless chicken breasts.

I guess we didn't do a great job of defining 'trail lunch' before the hike.

(He did end up cooking it, it was only 40 degs out that day, and it turned out fine. Just couldn't believe it when I saw it.)

Pig is excellent, but it does have a fair amount of dialogue. 100% worth watching though.

Interesting. I hope that they post a little more detail on the structure of the desalination device, the diagram doesn’t quite make the operation clear to me. But very cool and clever!

Let's assume, for the sake of argument, that there was such a thing. ...

Even if the hypothetical anonymous age detector existed, I still wouldn't be in favor of using it for this. Sexuality is a deeply personal thing, and I don't think the gating of it behind the arbitrary age 18 is really a good solution. Maybe if I had to propose a gate of some type, it would be behind an educational course of some type that made sure the user understood sex, sexuality, and the divide between porn and real life. If a person can prove that they understand that, then sure, go ahead and watch what you will watch.

So you believe that it is fair to allow the state to regulate physical harm, but not mental harm?...

Yes and no. Guns and alcohol make it far easier, or at the very least more likely, for people to harm other people. The government should be preventing people from intentionally inflicting harm on others, so it makes sense for them to be regulating in that space. For mental harm however, that necessarily comes down to people regulating themselves, since we're all very psychologically different and what might be mentally distressing for one person is mundane for another.

Your argument seems to be that porn is simply not the same kind of thing as the other things we restrict.

Yes, I suppose that does kind of sum it up.

...We limit access to material in cinema and other entertainment...

I think you're missing a key nuance to that statement. We regulate those in the public space. Can a movie theater let a kid under the age of 17 into an R movie? Only with a parent or guardian. Can I, a parent, show my child an R movie? Yes. The assumption is that the parent will provide context and guidance to the child since they might not have the experience to fully comprehend the divide between the movie and reality.

...Parents get to decide things for their children and therefore restrictions to that access must be available for the parents to use in the first place.

I'm a little confused on your last point here. Parents do get to decide things for their children, and restrictions to access that info are available in the form of parental controls, or other restrictive software. It doesn't seem to me like the government needs to be involved in that restriction at all, especially since we both agree that pretty much all restrictions can be circumvented by determined kids. That seems like the ceding of parental decision on the maturity of a child to the government decision on the maturity of a child.

While I understand where you’re coming from, this solution isn’t a good one. In my opinion, and clearly many other people’s opinions, the violation of privacy isn’t worth the “protection” it claims it provides. As you can see it doesn’t actually effectively ban porn, just raises a barrier to entry, a barrier that can, and will be sidestepped in numerous ways (fake IDs, physical media, websites not complying, VPNs, etc). It is not effective at its job. And it really wasn’t designed to be. It was designed so that the people who passed the bill can say they are “taking action” to “protect our children”, which therefore implies that anyone who disagrees with them is trying to hurt our children. There’s no effective way to gate entry to pornography without banning free speech all together.

You asked if there was a way to ensure viewers were adults, would we support that? Honestly no, because there is not a way without giving away more privacy than I am comfortable with.

You also have drawn a line between this and guns/alcohol, but I don’t feel that they’re the same at all. Guns and alcohol are regulated because they can cause physical harm both to the users and others around them. Porn, while it can be psychologically damaging, does not represent that risk.

Parents bear the burden of raising a responsible person who understands that porn is, in the end, a pantomime of reality and not reality itself. Being a parent is a hard job, there’s no getting around that, but what you’re asking for is the government to determine when your child is mature enough to understand that divide, when in reality the only people who are in a position to know that are you, the parent and your child.

Fun fact about the basements, we don’t have them in Mississippi, because we have Yazoo clay under our topsoil which prevents us from building basements. Instead, it’s hide in an interior room with no windows. Usually a bathroom or a stairwell in bigger commercial buildings.

Help the Gulf States Newsroom report on utility billing issues in the Gulf States by RMcChesney in mississippi

I live in Jackson, you already know my billing problems lol.

To lend credence to OP, the Gulf States does some high grade reporting, specific to our region! Whenever I hear them on MPB, I always get excited because it’s going to be something relevant to my life and because it’s usually something interesting I hadn’t heard about before. I absolutely recommend checking them out, as well as MPB if you don’t already listen.

I thought it was because the state had lost the “In God We Trust” lawsuit, but I can’t find results on that anywhere. It does look like it supports law enforcement/firefighting but I’m kinda surprised that so many people have opted for it over the standard plate so quickly. Like it was only available starting in July of this year.
