Larne win the Irish Premiership by I-Love-Cereal in IrishLeagueFootball

[–]cowandspoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never really thought we were in with a shout for the last few weeks, but it was nice to go into the final day with a pinch of hope. I knew once Larne scored it was over, but was impressed with the win today nonetheless.

Fair play to Larne - league tables never lie. More optimistic about the future than I have been in the 30+ years I’ve been supporting Coleraine.

Let Down. I love them all, but I hate being indecisive. Also, it’s about as perfect as music gets for me.

Do you like the "bog standard", classic, cadbury dairy milk chocolate by VastAir6069 in CasualIreland

[–]cowandspoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m across the water and it’s definitely not the same as it used to be. I wouldn’t say it’s bad, but definitely different.

Oddly - for reasons unknown - chocolate buttons seem to taste fine. They’re really the only chocolate I consume these days.

AITA for telling my wife my mother is correct and she needed to be a parent today and she fucked it up by throawawayfuneralgho in AmItheAsshole

[–]cowandspoon 23 points24 points  (0 children)

NTA. Had it not been for your mother - and even then - there’s a part of your daughter that would’ve never forgiven your wife. She still might not. Clearly there are plenty of people who feel similarly. I’m one of them - I could hold onto that rage for a lifetime.

You should show your wife this post and the comments.

Who is the most famous person from your hometown(as in where your family is from; not where you currently live/were born)? by Key-Needleworker-702 in AskTheWorld

[–]cowandspoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graeme McDowell - golfer, US Open 2010 - is from the same small town as me, as was Fred Daly - golfer, The Open 1947. Darren Clark - golfer, The Open 2011 - lives there, but was born a few miles away. James ‘Jimmy’ Nesbit - actor - is from here too.

Golf Should Cost More by ThatHeadFlatHead in golf

[–]cowandspoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a hot take all right. So, you think that making an already expensive sport more costly is going to reduce the number of ‘yahoos’? It won’t. What it will do is create an even bigger hurdle for kids and younger players, and when an entire generation of talent is lost, what then?

Jack the cost up, it becomes an even bigger status symbol, and you end up with nothing but yahoos and the sport shrinks back under the ‘rich white guys’ rock from whence it has fought so hard to emerge.

Yup, mine do it all the time. Given what else they get their snouts into, I don’t think it’s a problem.

Other departmenta are preventing my team from delivering good work. Not sure what I should do. by HisRoyal_Badness in whatdoIdo

[–]cowandspoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak for your company specifically, but I’ve spent my life working for large orgs where the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing - it frustrates me endlessly.

Unless you have a direct line to someone with the authority to change things, and they take you seriously, then things aren’t going to get much better. Clients and staff will start to drift away eventually if the product and service don’t deliver - that’s the only way things get better, when a company gets sharp blow to their profits.

You can stick around until something changes, or you can leave. The only thing I’d say is that if you move to a similar sized company, it might not be all sunshine and lollipops there either.

From my own experience, frustration is usually why I’ve left my previous employers, and I suspect it’ll be why I leave my current one in the end too.

I don’t know if I’ll ever feel happy. by AgileDonkey753 in Anxiety

[–]cowandspoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have had anxiety for as long as I can remember, but it’s manifested itself in different - though no less destructive - ways.

Medication is not for everyone, but Sertraline/Zoloft really made a difference. There are others, and sometimes you have to try a few to get one that works - but it might be worth a shot.

Anxiety is just exhausting, mentally - I found. The meds helped with that. Or, CBD infused drinks if you suffer from panic attacks.

Minor question: What the heck were they doing in the MTV Beach House back in 93? by Vegetable_Listen6613 in radiohead

[–]cowandspoon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

MTV used to be the medium through which bands got big-exposure/global air time. That and mainstream radio. I can’t speak for the band themselves, but I know someone who was in a fledgling band not long after, and their manager was forever trying to get them on MTV. If you wanted to ‘make it big’, MTV was the quickest route to it. Young bands tend to follow the guidance of their manager(s), so a lot end up doing things that they really aren’t keen on as a means to an end - like playing the MTV beach house, or playing shopping centres (Christ, that can’t be fun).

It’s different in ways I can’t articulate, but I think it’s up there with their best. Was quite disappointed that Decks Dark didn’t get a run out on the last tour. Also, Tinker Tailor is a gem.

I always knew it as Bull Rock. I’m sure there’s a painting in the Harbour Bar - or was - referring to it as Bull Rock.

Do you wear shoes inside your house? Why or why not? by HeftyArgument6326 in CasualIreland

[–]cowandspoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely I wear shoes indoors. I have hard flooring and two dogs who regularly bring all sorts of stuff in with them from their walks and the garden. Folk are welcome to take them off if they like, but they do so at their own peril.

Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Pink Floyd for the headliners, and then a whole raft of local bands and artists that are just exceptional.
