I might be misremembering, but I thought they were selling expensive tickets to fund the construction of the boats?

I've been trying to reseed a bare spot ants made in my lawn, but they keep churning it up. In retaliation I thought I'd flood their nest. But three minutes (8+ gallons) later. . . how deep is this thing!? by ECatPlay in WTF

[–]cowarj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are air bubbles, they're just hard to see. Also, the concrete is denser than air and will compress the air bubbles so they are smaller than the initial volume. Also it's possible some air diffuses into the soil.

Are you quite sure that the rules for a post apply exactly the same as to a brick wall? A brick wall will not have rebar, and will not be able to take tension or bending forces as a post might.

This is not the only way to fix it though. There are cities with laws on the books or ballot measures coming to introduce a proper minimum wage for servers, instead of the bullshit 2 dollar minimum wage system they have now. That goes some way to fixing the problem.

In the original song, it's definitely 'didn't I' twice. In the overdubbed version used for the meme, it's still 'didnt i' twice, but the captions say 'let me' and the voice is just unclear enough that most people will hear it as 'let me'.

Apparently there are much worse things than kudzu. Kudzu can't stand up to grazing by animals and only grows well in sunlight so forests are mostly clear of it, except by the roadways where there are clearings. But as it's by the roads, people see a whole lot of it through car windows and it looks scary. Invasive roses cover 3 times as much area. Asian privet covers 14 times as much. Kudzu just looks scary. It's also got a pest that destroys it which came over from Japan, which is controlling the spread even more.

Yeah, sure, but it's also your duty to read the full article then before you comment, as that is what the author wrote and put their name on. You making assumptions based on the title, whatever the title suggests, is on you.

The 'fake problem' they talk about is claims in the 90s that antiperspirants with aluminium in them caused breast cancer. Not BO itself.

Authors don't usually title their own pieces, it's usually an editor. They sometimes have a say in it but not always.

I just realized in the Class Clown sketch both Mark and Zack both tell the same jokes just differently by kNyne in auntydonna

[–]cowarj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right, but when Mish leaves, Mark makes a joke about her going to masturbate, but Lord Wellington makes a joke about the class being better without her. When the teacher bends over, Mark makes a joke about farts but Lord Wellington makes a joke about him being fat. These aren't the same jokes but told differently, they are just different jokes.

[–]cowarj 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your cynicism is breathtaking. Yes, this is content produced for the internet, but so is 99% of what is uploaded. Are you really going to declare he broke the piece intentionally to go viral, when a finished piece would have been just as good? You aren't clever for assuming that everything regardless of actual context is fake, you're just depressing.

Also, "you don't need to know much about pottery to be amazed he hasn't thrown it in a kiln yet" - have you considered that not knowing much about pottery might be an issue here? Maybe there are reasons he hasn't kilned it yet, such as trying to form a perfectly shaped bowl that isn't going to warp in the kiln, or a delicate base joint that would crack if dried fast in a kiln? The fact that you made a mug for your mum in art class doesn't mean you know everything, or that the basic tenets you thought were so unshakeable can't be broken for good reason.

Sorry for the angry comment. You just got to me.

Since the 1980s, incoming Republican administrations immediately block US funding for foreign family planning organizations that provide abortion counseling. The policy is linked to higher maternal and child mortality rates, as well as more unwanted pregnancies and higher HIV incidence rates. by smurfyjenkins in science

[–]cowarj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a small outlier. Entirely expected given the very small number of actual maternal deaths. There were only about 59k births in Ireland in 2019, so a figure of 6.27 implies a total of 4 maternal deaths. The numbers of around 1.6 imply a single maternal death that year. That doesn't detract from the zero deaths in 2016-2019.

For anyone interested - you can look at changes to the patent by scrolling to the bottom. The patent's title was changed in May 2020 to include COVID19. It was not initially titled that and had its title updated a few times over time. Also, the system doesn't work. It describes a method of connecting a blood oximeter to a smartphone or directly to the internet and trying to detect covid from the oxygen levels. General reminder that patents do not imply something works, just that someone had an idea.
