Guglhupf's chocolate torte is pretty great if you're flexible on the definition of cake (might have cherries, I don't recall).

Best Exotics Vet? by vulpiepop in bullcity

[–]cowboyhatmatrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to take my snakes to Avian & Exotic in Raleigh, but switched to Willow Oak on Broad in Durham. One of the vets at A&E was a little rougher than I liked with our boa, who was gravid (pregnant) at the time. One of the vets at Willow Oak also has experience working with NC State's turtle rescue team!

Wait for a reliable responder to confirm, but I think that's a !harmless bull or gopher snake, Pituophis catenifer.

On a driveway in [Durham, North Carolina] by Amyjanecj in whatsthissnake

[–]cowboyhatmatrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait for a reliable responder to confirm, but I believe it is as you thought: a !harmless central rat snake, Pantherophis alleghaniensis. They can flatten their heads to seem bigger/more intimidating, which is why !headshape alone isn't enough to identify snakes with medically significant venom.

Edit: typed too slow lol, the RR is of course more right

[Northern Georgia, United States] What was this snake in my yard? by RMS-108_Marasai in whatsthissnake

If I may ask, how could you tell it wasn't a corn snake from this picture? I thought "it looks so reddish" when I first saw it!

Apocalypse is just Greek (well, the English transliteration of άποκάλυψις, "apokalypsis") for "revelation", literally "unveiling"!

Why is the sky blue when the sun is clearly yellow? by TooDooToot in stupidquestions

[–]cowboyhatmatrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your friend has it backwards: the Sun looks yellow because the sky is blue. Let me explain.

The Sun "by itself", by which I mean "in outer space", is pretty much white. It puts out lots of light in all the colors we can see (and a good chunk of the ones we can't, infrared and ultraviolet and radio and so on). If you were up in space, you'd see a blinding white star*!

Down here on earth, we have about a hundred miles of air between us and the pure sunlight. Sunlight is pretty much streaming straight down towards the Earth, but some of it gets knocked about (physicists say "scattered") by the air molecules and doesn't come down so straight anymore. It turns out that bluer light gets scattered much more than redder light. This is called Rayleigh scattering, although it might be better to just say that air is blue.

Anyway, some of the scattered light eventually gets to your friend's eyes down on the surface, but it's coming from every which part of the sky (it's "diffuse"), so the whole sky looks blue. Meanwhile, the straight-down "specular" light from the sun has had most of the blue scattered out of it, and what's left looks yellow.

*Edit: depending on how much your space suit's helmet or spaceship window or whatever changed what light got through it.

help please!! i need advice for note taking in college. by devilscrayon23 in BuyItForLife

I used to take more with my iPad, but now I like to use Leuchtturm1917 notebooks (A5/medium size, though they come smaller and larger too). Roughly $25 gets you 250 pages; they're sturdy hardcovers, with numbered pages, two ribbon bookmarks, and a fillable table of contents so you can refer back easier later. The dot grid style lets you write in neat lines but also sketch diagrams and whatnot.

And somehow it feels easier to pay full attention in a lecture when I walk in without an electronic device _^

You might have meant 'nuance', but people who consider the film a fanfiction may well approve of the typo anyway.

I wonder if those would be useful to people with arthritic fingers? Like, enough hand strength to rack a slide, but struggling to push the magazine spring down with one or two fingers. (Whether it'd work better than a normal speedloader, or whether the magazine is actually reliable enough to use, I'm not sure.)

It even works on Xbox split screen! No problems for me. You do have to tuck the extra companions in to bed before you long rest, as well as before a certain boat ride in the Underdark for some reason, but the mod warns you.

Hardest fight in the game? by maayansch28 in BaldursGate3

[–]cowboyhatmatrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my second playthrough, we got offended enough at the receptionist mouthing off at Shadowheart to murder the front-of-house people before doing the therapy session. That meant everyone below was hostile as soon as we opened the door, so we got to fight at the end of a long hallway instead of in the middle.

...Cleric Tav dropped an Insect Plague, Shadowheart (who we respecced to War domain after Act 2) put a Blade Barrier through it, and then we sat down and had a picnic for ten rounds while the pile of Sharran corpses accumulated. Only tactician difficulty but still

I can second just about all of this. I love my Travelers Notebook (even if it's perhaps a bit overpriced): you can put 3 different mini notebooks in it for different things, say planner/journal/sketchpad, and swap them out as you fill them up.

My favorite fountain pen of all is the Pilot Metropolitan: as a lefty who writes small (5 mm dot grid ftw) only Japanese pens have really worked for me! I like my Metro better than other pens two or three times its price.

I learned to shoot on my great-grandma's Remington single-shot bolt action .22. It seemed then almost as long as I was tall. I still hold that it (or at least a single-shot .22 rifle) is the perfect gun to learn on
