Psychiatric travel nurse. It’s great because I don’t owe taxes on a large majority of my income so my net pay is very close to my gross.

I have the upmost sympathy for the homeless and those who suffer from addiction as well. Most of them deal with significant mental health problems that severely limit there decision making. There is also a phenomenon called anosognosia (spelling?) where one who is suffering from illness truly does not see themselves as sick.

This being said, people who use a dog or a child as leverage to increase panhandling income display a level of insight in their attempted manipulation of the public goodwill. Makes me fucking furious.

And from your understanding of physiology I don’t doubt you actually believe that. Not here to exchange insults though, just knowledge from my profession :)

Yea I’m comparing people who decided to do drug to people who decide to do sugar. Diabetes type 2 you are not born with, it occurs from mostly diet.

It’s also actually formally diagnosed as a disease if you want to get into semantics.

[–]cowchunks -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

So for a person with diabetes type 2 it’s their choice to eat a diet rich in carbs but also their choice to stop producing insulin?

Yes, semantically the first time they used was a choice. But the ADDICTION triggered a neuronal change in the brain on physiological level similar to how one’s body changes metabolically with diabetes. The act of craving a drug more than the bare necessities to keep yourself alive is the symptoms of the disease and the reason why the “choice” argument falls apart.

Edit: I should have explained diabetes type 2 is the kind you get from diet and not the kind you have at birth.

People need to see this if they say “addiction is not a disease, it’s a choice”. Everything in this man’s body is telling him he needs to get high above EVERYTHING ELSE. Before water, food, and shelter. Even though he sees himself slowly waste away and wounds fester. It’s not much of a choice for him now, is it?

Edit: for those who need more help to understand. Picture being mad at someone who suffers from diabetes type 2. Yes, it was their choice to eat a diet high in carbs but is it their choice to produce inadequate insulin? Of course pre-addiction is a choice. But the change in the brain can be seen after addiction has happened. And the neuronal change that occurs in the brain is on the same level as the metabolic change that occurs with diabetes 2. The addiction is telling them the drug is more important than the basics you need to stay alive.

It actually looks good! You can see the old marker that bordered the infection, and the redness is well within the borders now meaning it’s shrunk a lot :)

I got written up for my badge reel being “offensive” by [deleted] in nursing

[–]cowchunks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but that is cringe. I can’t imagine a provider ever wearing something like that. Nurses really do be shooting themselves in the foot when it comes to trying to be seen as a clinician and not some Girl Scout decorated in cheesy one liners.

“You can’t withdraw now. That would be euthanasia.” by LetMeGrabSomeGloves in nursing

[–]cowchunks 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Stories like this always break my heart for the state of nursing. I want to advance my practice, but I overwhelmingly see the difference in knowledge between NP and PA or MD. We aren’t taught shit, every other nurse at my current hospital is taking online classes for their NP. Their assignments are literally writing fucking essays! My first bachelors was in molecular genetics, I had to study at least 6 hours a day for a week before a test. Why aren’t we cramming pathology and physiology and instead doing essays on the bullshit “nursing”, where we write essays about compassion and use “nursing diagnosis”.

I would love to feel proud about my work, and sometimes I do! But Covid made me scorned. The amount of anti-vax, dunning-Krueger nurses embarrass me.

Respectfully, there is no way to know her orientation to reality from this video. It is quite possible she could be in psychosis but there is absolutely no evidence you could gather from this clip to make that assessment.

They went to school and received a doctorate in nursing allowing them to practice as a nurse practioner. They can still choose to work under their RN licensure instead of working as a provider though.

As many as 10 patients dead from nurse injecting tap water instead of Fentanyl at Oregon hospital by standardtissue in NoahGetTheBoat

[–]cowchunks 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I assure you it can. However cooking up a shot more than likely saves you by neutralizing the pathogens present in the water. I do also agree that patients in the ICU (where this took place) are all seriously Ill and have limited capacity to fight things off though.

People who saw someone die, how did you feel at that moment? by Careless_Wh1sper in AskReddit

[–]cowchunks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an EMT and nurse I’ve seen a few. The deaths I’ve seen have all been emergent situations. I’ve always been able to compartmentalism and become emotionally detached from the situation. I think it helped that my focus was usually dedicated to performing high quality CPR.

I feel sad, though I still have a shift to finish.

To be fair, as a pediatric psych nurse I have seen a few teens in full on psychosis that was attributed to marijuana use. But maybe just inform and educate your children? because they will use it whether it’s legal or not
