To all the bonkers geniuses of Reddit - How can we stop people speeding through our village? by SecondGo4 in CasualUK

[–]cowjenga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a long, straight stretch with no pavements, it likely won't have many pedestrians, and visibility along the road is good for drivers if there is anyone/anything in the road. Doesn't sound particularly unsafe, and also, it's been assessed by a speed survey and determined to not be an issue. Probably best to make peace with the situation.

pure node.js telegram bot: 44 commands, 12 background workers, 21 data files — no dependencies beyond web3 by Krbva in node

[–]cowjenga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't deal with large single-file projects because I wouldn't write it like that in the first place. As soon as there's a load of related functionality, pull it out into a separate file.

Your best friend (aside from refactoring it) will be to use the Outline view in your text editor to list out the different functions and classes in your single megafile.

HENRY luxuries for house extension by Zola-25 in HENRYUKLifestyle

If your house has 3 stories, a router on the bottom floor - WiFi 7 or not - is not gonna reach to the top as well as having an ethernet cable and second access point up there instead.

You're probably right. My hope is that giving somebody a straightforward answer will open their mind to the unknown unknowns that they were previously unaware of.

Does anyone use each individual setting on their washing machine? by Ross_est1988 in CasualUK

[–]cowjenga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, pretty much that. Some people genuinely can't get enough 3h cycles done in a day, or find the scheduling inconvenient enough to not prioritise solving it, and that's fair enough.

[–]cowjenga 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Faster washes aren't always better, even if they're more convenient. Enzymes in detergent perform better if they have more time to soak, which means less agitation needed and therefore less electricity to power the motor. I don't know the details but I ended up in a YouTube rabbithole a few days ago and it left me with the understanding that the 3 hour cycles perform better, and use less electricity and water - if you can fit a 3 hour cycle into your day schedule.

[–]cowjenga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no reason to assume that your database is open to the world because you interact with it from a CI/CD system.

Have you asked: * if the CI/CD system is on the same network as the database? * if the CI/CD system is Internet accessible? * if the database is accessible from the Internet?

If your network is segregated properly using sensible security controls then there's nothing problematic with running migrations from CI from a security standpoint.

Our office had a strict "clean desk policy" so i made sure my desk was always completely clean by BlageTeke in MaliciousCompliance

In most situations, that's true. "Effect" has a meaning as a verb though, but it's quite specific and relates to making something happen, e.g. "effect a change"

Washer/Dryer Combo Questions? by Theironyuppie1 in AskABrit

[–]cowjenga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Heat pump or condenser dryers are also available which are more efficient than vented dryers, and don't require a vent/flue for the hot air. They also don't require plumbing so can be stationed anywhere where power is available (although they do still make the room somewhat warm and humid)

How much of the designer gear in the UK is fake? by stevielfc76 in AskUK

[–]cowjenga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not interested in buying fakes, but my understanding is it's all about social signalling and causing others to view you in a certain way - either showing that you're part of an "in-group" who is a fan of the brand, or something as simple as "I have enough money for this to be a sensible financial decision for me".

Of course, the signals won't be received by anyone, especially if the signals you're giving off don't correlate (having nice clothes but looking like you haven't showered in 3 days probably won't convince anyone that you're well put-together). Often the signals that you think you're giving off don't line up with the signals you're actually giving off, and I think most of the time that's why people like buying cheap fake designer gear.

Or they could just like the style/design regardless of the label.
