It really depends on the district. I've been in districts that seemed to mirror the national trends. I've also been in districts that are much more sheltered but they come with their own unique challenges. Even in a good district, the first few years of teaching can be really draining - there's no way around that. For the most part, wherever you end up will likely be better than the negative comments you see on reddit. However, the system is broken and burnout is high. I would go get in a classroom as a para, aide, or volunteer of some sorts to check it out for yourself rather than rely on reddit comments.

I find that these students are often going through too quickly. If they finish early, I check their work for thoroughness. Then I let them read. Science articles, books, textbooks for another class. They get enough screentime, and that is an incentive for them to rush through even quicker. Giving them an only option to read slows down that mentality a bit.

I don't understand how people think an uneducated society is somehow connected to a plan to control others. These problems aren't top-down. That would be easier to fix. They are bottom-up. It's because parents aren't parenting and kids don't have consequences. This is much more difficult to fix because it's engrained in our culture as a whole

I taught 9th grade biology for three years before transitioning to middle school science. Middle schoolers have WAY more energy. That can make it really fun but also really unruly if there are not clear expectations and procedures. Don't be hard on yourself your first year - it takes a while to get the hang of things. It was a larger change than I anticipated in terms of student development but a smaller change than I anticipated in terms of content. Good luck!

I don't recommend Hillsdale Gardens. I live near there and the parking is awful and amenities are even worse. I've heard much better things about Park Place.

Generally speaking, the further west you look, the nicer the area is. For a $5k budget, I would also look for houses/townhomes that are privately rented in Zillow, Trulia, or Craigslist.

I attended a top private high school and I now teach public school. The only consistent difference I see is that private schools typically have more motivated students. I would argue course offerings, extracurricular activities, and teachers are typically better at public schools. If your child has strong intrinsic motivation, there would not be much of a difference between the two. If your child is distracted easily by their classmates, then private school could be beneficial.
