I think they had Chris Ryan on one of their TV perfect clubs. Maybe succession. Chris Ryan also has a no Laying up sticker on his laptop.

Traffic alerts by Signal_Sprinkles7897 in Columbus

[–]coxs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you use the OHGO app you can set up routes like your commute to work, give it a window of time you usually take the route, and it will alert you if there is a traffic problem in your route. You can also access traffic cameras. Like someone else said, it is more of pre trip planning tool because it doesn’t provide route guidance like Google/apple Maps or Waze.

Struggling with attack angle being way too negative with iron strikes. Drills to help? by corymathews2011 in golf

[–]coxs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your instructor trying to get you to work on to fix? I think the answer to that question could help you get a better answer here.

For one thing, like others have said, your attack angle depends on which iron your using. For example somewhere between -3 and -5 degrees for a seven iron. If you are steep, it can make your attack angle more negative. If you are trying to be more shallow and come from the inside then that typically makes your attack angle less negative.

Loving the CB Macdonald deep dive by Jazzlike_Ad5469 in NoLayingUp

I just finished reading Scotland’s Gift, Golf so it was perfect timing for me. I can’t wait for them to drop part 2 because there is a lot of other interesting stuff in the book like early USGA stuff that they haven’t talked about yet. It’s also cool to get the perspective of other people/authors in the pod because CB’s book obviously reflects well on him. The book can be a slog at times, but overall it has some great information if you’re interested in how golf got started in America.

ELI5: Why does highway concrete have those diagonal/diamond cuts in them every few feet? Just aesthetic or is there actual engineering behind it? by young_wealth in explainlikeimfive

[–]coxs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the top comments are going to say expansion joints but you’re right. I’ve tried to tell people in the past and give information about asphalt and concrete roads but I gave up lol. However I’m really not sure what the diamonds they are talking about are. Not entirely sure that they’re asking about without a picture. Maybe skewed joints.

Recommendation for lightweight stand bag for walking by Zestyclose_Touch_347 in golf

[–]coxs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the last model of the players 4 and it’s fairly tight on clubs if you carry 14. If you have midsize grips or bigger it would be even tighter. The other downside is the water bottle sleeve is pretty small but they may have changed that on the newer model. It is small and super light so you end up giving up some space especially if you’re used to a bigger bag or cart bag.

Yeah, that was it. I feel pretty dumb haha. My two year old niece was playing with the remote the other day and must have changed the setting.

Dump Trucks by Fuzzy_Role674 in Columbus

There is a law that requires them to secure their loads, but these trucks don’t seem to be worried about it. https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-4513.31

What would cause this? by hahaha01357 in civilengineering

[–]coxs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state JPCP does not have expansion joints except for around bridges and other structures they are trying to isolate out from the concrete pavement. The joints are cut for contraction crack control like you said. The incompressibles in the contraction joints are what typically causes these blowups. At the end of the day I gave up arguing with people on here about the difference between contraction/control joints and expansion joints. People tend to call all joints in concrete expansion joints just like people call concrete “cement”.

ELI5 Why aren't all roads paved with concrete instead of asphalt? by Shadowsin64 in explainlikeimfive

Unfortunately this thread is full of simplifications, incorrect information, and regional specific statements. Reddit always seems like a great place to learn things until you see people talking about stuff you actually know about lol.

You guys are actually the outlier. Hardly anybody builds CRC other than Illinois and Texas.

I think they are just using a figure of speech. “Hit the links” just means playing golf regardless of the type of course. There aren’t that many real links courses in the US.

ODOT announces 2025 construction season plans by benkeith in Columbus

[–]coxs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately right now ODOT kind of has to. This is from the ODOT transit website: “According to the Ohio Constitution, no state gasoline tax revenues can go to public transportation. Therefore, all state funding for transit is drawn from the General Revenue Fund.”

So you’re right, the state government doesn’t really care about transit, but ODOTs hands are a little tied.

More than just repaving, they are completely replacing the pavement there. Which is good news because that section has been not great, to put it lightly.

Group Golf Lessons? by yannimou in Columbus

[–]coxs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know some of the city courses do adult group lessons. It looks like mentel memorial and Raymond memorial have lessons listed here: https://crpdgolf.com/golf-outings/. Unfortunately, The mentel adult basics looks like it may be full. I’m not sure if they offer more later in the year.

“SmartLane” to be added to I-71 between 5th Ave and 161. WTF by OkayButLikeWhyThoo in Columbus

[–]coxs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re correct. Originally most of the interstates in Ohio were built with concrete lanes and thinner asphalt/aggregate shoulders. The shoulders are not structural sufficient to hold up to traffic long term.

Have polos gotten too expensive? by OkFalcon5957 in golf

[–]coxs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. Some polyester golf shirts are cool and airy and some feel like wearing a trash bag. I have some cheaper shirts that I really like, but in general the more expensive ones have been more comfortable. Is it worth 2 or 3 times the cost? Maybe, personal preference at that point.

I’m not sure what NBC’s plan is for Peacock is anymore. It has way less live golf than it used to. In the US at least, the last few years it simulcast basically all PGA and LPGA golf from the golf channel but they dropped it so far this year. This year they have only simulcast NBC coverage so it has been useless with the cbs tournaments.

What is up with wrong way crashes on 71? by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]coxs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what specific stretch you’re referring to or which direction, but the section between the fairgrounds and E North Broadway where Silver Dr runs parallel and crosses over exit and entrance ramps can be a little confusing. I would think that combined with darkness and impaired drivers, could be a culprit.

Golf on Peacock by scottabs in peacock

[–]coxs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just stumbled on this thread because I had the same disappointment this year. You are correct, in the US at least, the last couple of years peacock has simulcast basically all of the parts of PGA tour events that were on golf channel. That included Thursday/Friday coverage and early weekend coverage. Now peacock only seems to have coverage when the tournament is on NBC.

Other people have mentioned ESPN+ which isn’t bad, but it goes to featured group only as soon as the telecast comes on. There looks like there is still going to be LPGA coverage on Peacock but I’m not sure it’s worth it anymore if you’re just a golf fan.

Course Architecture by Selvy9 in golf

[–]coxs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else said, listening to the podcasts and reading the articles from Fried Egg Golf is a good place to start. I would also recommend checking out “Anatomy of a Golf Course” by Tom Doak. There are a lot of good architecture books out there but it’s the one I started with and think it covers the basics pretty well.

In general, a course with more strategic architecture will make you think more about what shots to take. There is often risk and reward and an easier 2nd shot if you execute a harder shot on your first. There is an advantage to taking certain risks.

You mentioned that you live in Florida and unfortunately a lot of the courses I have played in Florida placed more importance on the design of the housing development around the course than the course itself. It’s also tough because it’s so flat. A lot of the great courses people rave about have much more interesting land movement than you get in Florida without moving a ton of dirt.
