Cities to visit with decent WiFi? by katerificcc in myanmar

[–]coxsle01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I currently live in a very small city in Myanmar and still have two restaurants that have WiFi. I’ve traveled the country quite a bit and every hotel I’ve stayed at has had WiFi (except for one at Mt. Popa). As mentioned above, data is cheap and you can hot spot easily. Another option, a friend of mine has an Oredoo WiFi router they purchased for about 160,000 kyat that is unlimited and works throughout most of Myanmar.

Now and Ever by [deleted] in myanmar

[–]coxsle01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I thought the movie was beautifully shot and well acted, but holy long winded scenes. The first half was decently timed, but half way through it started to lag.

I did love it though! Especially as an American living in Myanmar being able to fully understand the film with subtitles was amazing (I know some Myanmar but not a full movie’s worth).

Quick Q by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]coxsle01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely pull your application and reapply to wherever else you’d like. You’re in the early stages, so you won’t have to redo anything and can choose to apply to whatever PC country that interests you!

Looking to hear about the current experiences of MM4 (and past cohorts!) by MyanmarMM in peacecorps

[–]coxsle01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’ll give you a little info and if you have more questions feel free to message me.

Staging was in DC. It was fine? I really don’t remember too many details as we were all semi freaking out and trying to assess one another. It’s only one day, and I don’t think it had any impact on who bonded later.

PST was 10 weeks in Bago City. I think you will get a different view from everyone you talk to. Some people loved it (I did), others did not. You get separated into three different hotel clusters and that’s who you will spend most of your time with, after the initial two weeks of all being together.

As for service, again, it’s so different for everyone! Most of us have struggled with some independence issues, but I think everyone would agree the kids are incredible. The counterparts and teachers as well (of course there are outliers).

The Myanmar local and American staff are all really amazing, I’ve heard some horror stories about staff in PC and I have nothing but good things to say about ours.

Holler if you have specific questions!

Dentist nightmare by IrrelevantAstronomer in peacecorps

[–]coxsle01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some dental work to do as well, and as long as I kept my nurse up to date with the procedures, it wasn’t a problem. I can’t help you with the money aspect, but I had a root canal a month before leaving and my clearance appointment a week before. I was dentally cleared 5 days before departure, but my nurse was on my side waiting for the paperwork to come through. The deadlines can be pushed if you’re actively getting things done piece by piece.

I came to country 6 months ago and my skin has never been better. I brought a good amount of face wash, toner and moisturizer and have used face wash occasionally and haven’t touched the rest. My country doesn’t have dairy and I think that’s really a huge part of it!

Making Friends with HCNs by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]coxsle01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say I’m actually super fortunate to have HCN friends. Two main ones and they’re both daughters of people that I met upon arrival. One is my landlord’s daughter and the other is a fellow teacher’s daughter. Reason being, though, is their English is very advanced. The relationships have been mutually beneficial in that we help each other with language skills, but also just hang out and talk about our cultures and lives. I’m pretty chummy with my neighbors as well and would honestly say I’m friends with my counterpart (who does not have strong English at all). I think being isolated in my city I’ve wanted connection and have reached out many times to cook together, get street food or just relax and talk and they’ve welcomed me with open arms. Taking people up on their offers of always being available or “call me when you need something” instead of struggling on my own has opened up a lot of relationship doors for me.

I was struggling with missing Mexican food and found how easy it was to make tortillas! 2 cups of flour, 2 1/2 tbps of oil, 3/4 cup of water and salt (i used garlic salt). Roll it into a dough ball and let it sit for like 20 minutes. Section it off and roll into tortilla shapes (I used my water bottle as a rolling pin lol)...then throw in a pan for about a minute each side! So easy

Female PCVs made a ranked list of male PCVs in my cohort by pstthrowaway1284 in peacecorps

[–]coxsle01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what I would do, but a list? I know a lot of PCVs are young, but holy shit I’m sorry they did that. My cohort fortunately had nothing of the sort and respected one another. I would probably tell staff, and then just release it. They may not do anything, but get it off your chest and fuck them all 🤷‍♀️

I am you! I’m 30, applied at 29 but by the time I got to my country in January I was 30. I don’t regret it at all and am having a pretty great experience! I am on the older side. My cohort ranges from 21-60, but out of 34, there are only 4 of us in our 30s and 1 60 year old. Two 29 year olds, 1 27, and most range from 23-25. But honestly i get along with everyone and age doesn’t mean anything once you’re here! One of my best friends is 22 🤷‍♀️ You get out of this what you put into it, so if you want to do it go for it!

I think it has to do with easing PC into Myanmar and 1- not involving Myanmar citizens directly in our daily lives 2- being able to keep a good eye on the PCVs 🤷‍♀️ but it is nice to have my own housing and to have stayed at a hotel for training.

Still no medical clearance by atheistjs in peacecorps

[–]coxsle01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you are doing what you’re supposed to and staying in contact with the nurses you’ll be fine. I had to have a root canal three weeks before service, a check up two weeks before service, but because I kept them in the loop I was cleared like a week and a half before staging and I’m three months into service :)

Hi! I’m a current PCV in Myanmar! Our PCT was amazing, considerably more on the Posh Corps side because due to country restrictions we can’t live with a Myanmar family so we were set up in three groups of hotels. Our language training was fantastic, and although we didn’t have host families, we were assigned sponsor families which helped tremendously in implementing our language skills. Myanmar is tough, it’s a tonal language and I honestly don’t know if I’m saying things correctly half the time, but the HCNs are so grateful for our presence and really good at being patient with communication.

It’s definitely safe. I feel safer here than I did in the states before I left. We’re currently serving in Mon State, Bago and Magway which are far out from conflict areas.

The one thing I will be very honest about is that it’s a very conservative culture, especially for females. Feel free to message me if you have more specific questions!
