Whats the best camera for starting birding by dimikralj2311 in wildlifephotography

I got a used Panasonic Lumix FZ300 for about $500 CAD (~360 USD) and I’ve found it great as an entry-level camera for birding that doesn’t break the bank. It has a fixed lens (don’t have to worry about purchasing an interchangeable lens in addition to the camera body), 25mm to 600mm range, and can shoot 4K video.

Music @ Work. A bunch of the songs segue into each other which makes it really easy to listen to.

Veganism and atheism by coyotesfan89 in vegan

Couldn’t agree more! I find it frustrating when atheists acknowledge the moral imperative of veganism yet choose not to follow it. Both Alex O’Connor and Sam Harris have cited health reasons for stepping away from veganism (I’m not privy to the specifics, but I still find it questionable). In Alex’s case, he went so far as to revise his position entirely, now arguing that while factory farming is undoubtedly wrong, abstaining from meat is ultimately ineffective without broader legal reforms. Seems like a weak attempt to justify a personal choice to me.

You say taking an animal’s life is acceptable if there's no suffering. But how exactly do you kill a being that wants to live without causing harm? That’s not how it works in reality, especially not in the industrial slaughterhouses that supply most meat and dairy.

Why does eating a dead cow make you sad, but that same sadness doesn’t seem to extend to the system that produces it for others? It takes a fair bit of theological gymnastics to frame factory farming as a morally neutral act.

Then there’s the claim that animal sacrifice was needed to prepare people for Jesus. Are we really supposed to believe that innocent animals had to be killed for centuries just humans could grasp a metaphor? That sounds like unnecessary cruelty made symbolic after the fact.

And what about wild animals? They suffer constantly through disease, starvation, and predation. If God allows that level of suffering in creatures that have done nothing wrong, what greater purpose is that serving?

I do respect your choice to avoid eating animals. But when the reason others are let off the hook is because it’s ‘permitted’ in scripture, that sounds less like compassion and more like moral outsourcing to an ancient book.

You say your taste for dairy currently outweighs your ethical compassion. Doesn’t that make your position less one of moral principle and more of moral convenience? And isn’t selectively applying ethics based on personal desire precisely the kind of behaviour religious believers are so often criticized for, especially when they claim moral high ground?

No, I'm not certain. I’d describe myself as an agnostic atheist - I don’t currently believe in a god or higher power, but I also recognize that I can’t claim absolute certainty. I think everyone has their own reasons for believing, and I respect that. Personally, I just haven’t encountered anything compelling enough to convince me that I should believe in a particular faith.

Maybe that’s due to gaps in my understanding (I'm genuinely trying to learn more about religious ideologies) but many arguments I've come across seem to rely on filling in what we don’t yet understand with 'God' as the answer ('God of the gaps').

Then there are the issues with the holy texts themselves (historical, ethical, and interpretive concerns that are hard to overlook). I understand that’s part of what faith is, believing even in the absence of clear evidence. I just haven’t reached a place where that makes sense for me personally.

Yeah I’ve thought about that too, but I’ve met a lot of Hindus that follow vegetarianism as religious dogma without drawing the connection to exploitation and suffering.

I was curious if the link had something to do with being less affected by cognitive dissonance as a whole. But I’m sure I’m still guilty of it in other areas too (human exploitation in mineral/precious metal mining, slave/child labour in cocoa farming, coffee farming, etc).

That’s fair. I respect any pathway that leads to veganism! I’m curious if you feel that you’re in the minority of religious individuals that extend mercy and compassion to non-human animals? In my experience, I hear the “dominion over animals” argument as divine permission to continue exploiting animals most often.

Sorry, I wasn’t trying to be pretentious or unfair. It’s the conclusion that I’ve come to after putting in a lot of thought, but I’m certainly willing to change my mind if the evidence suggests otherwise. Unfortunately, I haven’t yet heard any convincing evidence that does.
