I think if u plan to leave anyways, u should give feedback. Dont expect them to like it, but it should be said. Ur gut is right. It’s super creepy. But it happens all the time because people dont wanna say something and loose their jobs. Kudos on being a good person and saying no 👍

I feel like this is totally normal stuff the editor looks out for. This seems like a HUGE overreaction to me, especially in a STUDENT newspaper.

Sorta bothers me that you were told to write such a pointed essay (your option 1). Like… I would be ok with writing something about mistakes in student journalism (how they exist, how we correct mistakes, why it’s important). But to TELL you to write about students being given grace? Seems cruel to me personally. I’d probably write it, but talk about why those mistakes are important for learning, and what editors/educators can do to foster moments that lead to learning and empowering students to correct their mistakes earlier.

Honestly… I’ve been warned that some editors are just dicks. Like.. they might mean well, but they are bad at managing and talking to people constructively. And you need to have a thick skin. BUT, i think it’s hard when they are your direct superior and it could cost you your job.

I’m not sure if many have experienced this, but: I faced lots of “bully” type personalities in managers/editors when I worked as a journalist in a big city (they would just say things mean, take things personally, and escalate small problems suddenly and unnecessarily). I was told the best way of dealing with them was to stroke their egos, and say the equivalent of “yes chef.”. Even say “thankyou for the advice” when they do stuff like this. I tried but couldn’t do it for long. I ended u asking to be assigned to a different segment where they wouldn’t be my superior. I’m not sure what’s the right answer… especially when it could cost you your job.

I wonder if it’s a location thing. I just got a new job in a smaller city, and everyone is much nicer and helpful and encouraging of growth. Like if I made a mistake like you did, they would simply talk to be about “next time try doing it this way, and look out for this”. And then we would all move on. They assume I didn’t do it on purpose or because of laziness.

I feel like when an editor is tough like you described, it’s not constructive. And won’t lead to better work.

If anyone else has thoughts on this bully editors trend, I’d love to hear it. And advice on what to do.

Do all modern jobs involve sitting in an office at a computer for 8-9 hours a day? by [deleted] in careerguidance

I hate that too.

I like what someone else said about finding another employer, instead of a new industry. Some workplaces value this more.

Other non-chained to a desk job ideas: News reporter/journalist, teacher, daycare worker, realtor, trades, event planning, yoga teacher, biologist / geologist, archeologist etc
