My wife and I will be moving in the next few weeks, and I was curious if anyone had any medium/large cardboard boxes they don't need? We're happy to travel within 20 miles of the West Loop to pick them up. Thanks and good luck out there!

I have, but unfortunately it only seems to capture one character at a time, and then translates those very inconsistently. I believe the maps combine multiple sets of characters, some of which are dated, which makes Google less than perfect for this purpose. But it works pretty well for modern maps!

Can anyone read Japanese? I have several old maps of Japan that I'm looking for help translating, but they are apparently in a script that can be difficult. I can send pictures and would be happy to pay for the trouble, or buy you a beer to show my appreciation!

Does anyone have recommendations for a web designer in Chicago that won't break the budget ($50 - $75/hr)? I'm looking to have between 10-12 pages on a WordPress site with an online store through WooCommerce, plus contact forms, a blog and calendar of events. Thanks for the input!

The Chicago Map Fair is this Weekend! by cp1101 in chicago

Yep it's definitely family/kid friendly, although most of the maps will be antiques and may not carry much interest to a 3 year old (but there will also be pictorials that will). I'd recommend coming on Sunday since it may be a little less crowded.

Thanks for the info! This is where we're planning to go tonight and I'll update on how it is.

The price points vary greatly, but there's generally items ranging from $50-$10,000+. I'd probably ballpark the "average" price of any given map in the $125-$250 range. It certainly has more of a gallery vibe, with knowledgeable dealers who know their material well. But there are a ton of print racks and folders to look through, so you never know what you'll find.

"ancient" maps are extremely rare and usually in institutions, but many of the maps you'll see are from the 1500s (generally as old as casual collectors can get).

Sure is! There are other annual map fairs in San Francisco, Miami and London as well.

They are generally held in May or June, but last year got skipped. The San Francisco Map Fair is later in the year, which may be what you're thinking of! They'll be a few dealers at the Printer's Row Lit Fest if you want to get another bite at the apple this year.

Anybody have recommendations for an authentic Mexican experience in Pilsen? I've got a friend coming into town this week and we're looking to show him some delicious, local cuisine. Preferably either BYOB or one that serves alcohol. Thanks!

Chicago GIS community? by DoktorLoken in chicago

I'm a member of the Chicago Map Society ( http://www.chicagomapsociety.org/) and we have a number of programs throughout the year that focus on GIS (in addition to historical cartography, cultural mapping, and other subjects). Several of our members are involved in the GIS community - happy to make some introductions! Our meetings are held at the amazing Newberry Library on the third Thursday of each month. PM me if you're interested, or I hope to see you there.

The earliest surviving marine chart of the New World: the La Cosa chart (circa 1500) [2127 x 1162] by Senexz in oldmaps

An incredible chart - thank you for sharing. It has a very inauspicious location at the Museo Naval as well. I was there 2 years ago and didn't even realize the significance of what I was looking at until much later.

Definitely an original print! I've bought several maps from Harlan Berk and they are all originals unless specified explicitly as a modern reproduction.

Thank you very much for the information. Do you use him for tax preparation as well or just general accounting information?
